file how to? BF baby to use bottles

15 years 4 months ago #187715 by Juandre
My first baby was put onto the bottle from 3 weeks and took to the Nuk straight away.

With my second baby I started expressing and giving her one bottle feed a day from 6 weeks. She battled with the Nuk so I tried the Tommy Tipee and she took to that. She has successfully swapped between the bottle and breast since then. Sh eis now nearly a year old and I have just weaned her off breast milk and onto formula still using the Tommy Tipee bottles.

My suggestion would be to definitly try other bottles until you find one baby likes. Dont be tempted to stop the bf and use formula. Good luck

I didn't have the option of somebody else giving the bottle. The breastfeeding clinic advised that I put my child in a seat, and sit behind her, with a distraction in front of her. So that she forgots that it was me giving the bottle. It was very frustrating, but I kept trying for 7 hours, and eventually she took the bottle.
After that I successfully swapped between breast and bottle.
Like the others have said, its just a new skill they have to learn and if you're around, and visible, they know there's an alternative that they much prefer.
I tried four different bottle types, and my LG ended up chosing the MAM bottle. So it really is different from child to child.
Good luck.

It's heartbreaking putting them onto the bottle.

It took me two weeks to wean my baby from breast to bottle. She was 3 months old. We tried everything....but really you must just hang in there.

I tried refusing to give her breast (with the mindset that she will be so hungry, she'll take the bottle) but she would just scream till she falls asleep of exhaustion. and then obviousley i would give her breast when she wakes up.

We tried different people giving her bottle, i would leave the area...that also didn't work.

It's the bottles teats they don't like, not the milk. i tried putting breast milk in bottle, and that she also refused.

In the end, she took to the pigeon bottle when daddy gave it to her. so get yourself a few cheap bottles with different types teats.

I also heard the tommee tippee bottles are very nice if you are breastfeeding, cause it's a small teat. the pigion bottles have a sort of ribbing.

hang in there, it gets better. i also thought she would never take to a bottle but eventally she did. take it one day at a time. try inbetween feeds.

You must rememer, it's a new skill they have to learn to suck on a bottle. just like learning to suck on the breast, it doesn't always happen the first time. and its just strange to them. so be patient, and good luck. before you know it, she'll be on the bottle.

Hi,

I introduced the bottle with EBM early at about 6 -7 weeks and she took form the bottle and boob and then at about 3 months decided she hated the bottle and would only breastfeed.

when I went back to work , I also tried to wean her to bottle, but she refused,

Try a different bottle, Nuk , wide neck worked for us, Paige hated the TT, she would look at us like there was no way we were fooling her - it wasnt a boob :), also I never fed her, get someone else to.

We also tried a sippy cup instead of a bottle, you get ones for use from 3 -4 months, and she took that and then we kept trying the bottle

When I went back to work, she still refused it, but then there was nothing else and she had to take the bottle from my mom, the first 3 days she had minimal milk and then after the first week, was taking the bottle no problem.

Hopefully when your LO is hungry enough she will take the bottle

Let someone else give her the bottle. She is associating boob juice with you and won't really want to take a bottle from you but will want the real thing. Go out and get a pedi and a coffee and get DH to give her a bottle while you out and see what happens?

Carmen I would squeeze some milk into Dylan's mouth from the teat but he was an easy baby and took the bottle well. Just remember that the bottle we choose for baby may not work for baby so if she keep rejecting the bottle you may want to try a different one and often the cheapies work the best like pigeon.
