hi there ladies,

i started with veggies at 4 months and he loved it. 2 weeks later tried porraige for breakfast. he wanted nothing to do with rice cereal or baby porraige at all. so i made him mieliepap, mixing in breastmilk, and he likes it alot. he didnt even bother the texture. some mornings he gets so irritated with me that i dont get to mix in enoch milk then het just gets it very textured.
its just so funny

he is now 5 months and were are starting 3 meals a day nou. pap, then fruits for lunch and veggies for dinner.

me 35, DH 39

Hi j-w

I really just want to add to what SwartKat is saying. With my son I used to always start with new foods on a weekend so that I can see what reaction he may have on the food. So that way you can maybe give the veg at lunch time on Saturday and if there's no issues, try it on the Sunday at the time that you would give it if it was a week day.

I started with porridge, but have already decided to skip it all together when I have another baby. Veg imo is just so much better and more nutritious. Loved the fruits of the organic brands as it tasted so much better. In the beginning I made all the veg myself, but later started to use Hipp and Olli. Just watch out for any stabilisers etc in the ingredients list - I only bought the ones with pure veg and water.

Hope this helps. :)

It's not selfish, I think all of us wanted to teach our kids to eat!!! Don't apologise for being a good mom, you're obviously doing a great job so far.

Why don't you try and read up a little on veggies like butternut, carrots and maybe sweet potato, and see what people write about their child's initial reaction to it? I don't think there should be any adverse/negative effects of those 3 veggies, cramping or whatever. I think you should be able to feed him with veggies with relative ease between 5 and 6 pm.

At the end of the day I don't suppose it really matters if you would rather start with cereal first, but it can take a bit of trial-and-error to find the brand that your baby likes. I think that's why so many of us go with veggies, because butternut is butternut.

Whatever you choose, keep your camera charged and ready, it's really a messy period that will lead to some fun photos for the album.

I think I'm just selfish in one hand... I want to be able to share the experience with him... so if I start with veg, it will be better to give it to him in the morning (to check if he has a reaction to it or gets stomach cramps or what ever)... so that means the daycare will have to give it to him, I'll miss it  ... With rice porridge I can start in the afternoon after work with me  - from what I've read it's easier to digest and also less likely for a reaction...

Also I've read that a baby is less likely to have a reaction to foods from 6 months and up (don't know how true it is though)

I think I just want to "teach" him how to eat, therefor saying he must be able to eat before starting veggies (at daycare)

Sounds like you've researched a bit and put a lot of thought into this.

People's opinion on the right time to start differs a lot, most will say not before 6 months. That's also in a utopia where all babies are exclusively breastfed until they reach 6 months, and the reality is different for at least half of us.

I started at 18 weeks, with permission from my paed.

Why do you think he should be able to eat well, before introducing veggies? I'm not criticising, I'm just curious why you think babies like porridge more than veg, or why it would be easier to start with that? In my mind veggies would come first, because it is easier to digest and because it's tastier than porridge. The baby cereals all taste pretty much like cardboard, yucky! You want your baby's first impression of solid foods to be good, so that he's eager to try more.

Thanks for everyone's replies!

My LO is only 5 months now... that's why I wanted to start with porridge... what age did you guys start?

Reasons why I want to start now is:

  • My LO has doubled birth weight
  • Sitting skills are progressing and there is head control
  • Staring and much interest in our food
  • When he watches us eat, he makes chewing motions with his mouth

Another thing is that I'm working during the day and my LO goes to a daycare... I wanted to start giving porridge at 5 in the afternoon (in between bottles) for one week, then give morning and afternoon feeds (porridge) the next week, week 3 3x feeds (porridge) a day and then week 4 start giving veg (then he'll be 6 months)? I want him to know how to eat before I start veg, because I'm not with him during the day...

    What do you guys think?
