In fact, 22 weeks. So the 13 week scan is not really very accurate. They say you can see if baby is down's but they actually can't. That's what my midwife and my sonographer friend told me.
The insurance for sonographers have gone up so much, that we'll all likely be paying IN when going for a 20 weeks scan. Jay, that's why it is so expensive now.
A 13 week scan is apparently "safe" to do, because you can't really see anything. The 20 week scan is the big and important one.
I was actually quite upset when I heard this, because we are always told exactly what you were told. 13 week scan is so important. So. I don't know.
I guess it's the same as with most things when you are pregnant. You are very often not told all the facts.Please Log in or Create an account to join the conversation.

They do a detailed assessment on your baby and I supposed for me I wanted to know so that I get be emotionally prepared for any outcome. Luckily the results were good. We decided to go for the Fetal Assessment at 12 weeks and at 20 weeks because we wanted to be prepared for anything - for example if there was something wrong with her heart etc. Also, I was born with one functioning kidney and my husband was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex congenita and we figured we'd want to know and prepare ourselves beforehand.
Luckily the only thing that was found was that I have placenta previa but hopefully that would have moved completely by the time I give birth,

If you don't want one you don't have to have one, but they can help to pick up any problems that might need to be looked at soon after birth if there are any.Please Log in or Create an account to join the conversation.

The doctor said he is sending so that if there is anything wrong with the heart we can plan ahead. I will chat him maybe tomorrow

There is a positive and a negative about the fetal assesment scan.
With the scan, they check everything, the heart, the kidneys, bladder, brain and everything. If a baby does have a heart problem, then they can see it, and when the baby is born, they can do something about it immediately. And not find out only a few days later that there is a problem. And so the positives go on.
BUT if you know of the problem, you will always think of it, and then you start to worry and stress.
But like Antz said, it will not make a difference to me, what they find, I will still love that child with all I got.
But it is still your dicision.
The lady I got to, do it anyway, it is not like I have to go to another person to get it done, and mine cost only R350.00

A difficult decision indeed... we didnt go for any FAS as the outcome of the scan would not influence our decision on whether or not we would keep our babies... It was simply not an option... we would love them no matter what...
Its a very personal decision that only you can make...
