Lolo, he's too small to worry. Let him play, until he keels over from exhaustion. My son never liked sitting still. Watching TV took away play time. I could't take him to watch my daughters athletics or netball games, because he would probably run onto the field, which he did do the first time I took him. I hate taking him to the shops because he want us to play hide and seek while shopping. It's a massive joke when we have to run after him.
The only time Armand sits down is when we are reading to him, or he is busy doing art with his sister, or he is busy with his "schoolwork" at creche.. The rest of the time he is out busy running or climbing or whatever.

Rm thanks. Dylan always stands in his high chair(no worries I sit with him) and then he eats better. I also give him something to bang etc and as long as he has his own food bowl and fork he is fine. The dog also distracts him.

Dylan is a bit oc and loves sitting. He loves corners too (maybe naughty corner at school).

rm- what is not the same thing? im not sure i follow?

julz- i battled initially with comments and raised brows from family and friends, but i told them thats my choice for him and its final so everyone knows no sweets and coldrinks for him. yeah he's been to a party and had a marshmallow or 2 but he wasnt too phased by it.

he loves his fruit and veg as well so i really dont feel his behaviour has anything to do with his diet which was and is strictly controlled. even at daycare, they dont have treats of all sorts. as for tv- he doesnt give it a second look. if he hears the etv news then he starts dancing lol (you know then bending the legs kind of dance) but he doesnt even watch tv (this is not coz of me :)) i dont have problems with sleep time either. he knows its time to nap or sleep when i put him in his cot and walk out.

just waiting for RM's clarity then i can start the running after him again without any concern

lolo well done. Dylan has never had any fizzy drink. (don't think daycare would give any). He also doesn't have sweets. I don't mind the odd treat at a party, but he actually doesn't like sugary things. I now keep a cut up apple in my bag and give him that as a treat which he loves.

I started giving Dylan the odd fruit juice but quickly put a stop to it as he loves water.

We grew up on coke and I hate water as a result. I don't want Dylan too. I also think we were far more active as kids so we used to work the sugar off. I have a restricted tv poilicy. Maybe an hour on a saturday. The rest of the time is spent us dancing to music or drumming or him just running around. He passes out each night no hassles.

At age 17 months I don't think kids should have to sit and paint etc. I first thought our daycare were not doing their job ( don't get me wrong they are brilliant with him) as I never get paintings etc, but the owner said why. At his age he should be playing and climbing etc.

Not the same thing, but my son struggled to sit still when we ate dinner or with certain activities.

I took him to an OT who assisted us to distract him by doing something with his body, so his mind could concentrate.

For instance, he sits on a cushion that allows his weight to shift by him moving his bum, so this way he can release pent up energy, so his mind and hand can concentrate on writing.

We also have him stand and eat his food at dinner time, as he cannot sit still - he fidgets, and I scream at him, and well it all goes pear shaped. But he can stand still and eat his food.

Or I put an elastic under his chair - on the leg of the chair, so he can expend energy pushing his foot against the elastic, while the rest of his body remains still and he concentrates.

The OT explained it better, but it is really pent up energy that is distracting him. So I find situations or things that he can do to get rid of the energy so he can sit down again and concentrate.

It really is a case of recognising a problem and finding a creative way to solve it without getting yourself stressed and your child medicated.

Just putting that out there.

i havent even though about the whole adhd (whatch ma call it) so im not even thinking about being concerned now  thanks for that bit of info julz, didnt know that and it explains a hell of a lot now.

about his diet, he hasnt had a drop of any fizzy drinks since birth (am i depriving him???) He has either rooibos tea or water with his meals. He is so unfamiliar with sweets and coldrinks that he doesnt even know what it is if he sees it (selfish am i???)his overactivity is partly the reason for not giving him any. alot of people think im harsh but thats my choice for him.

he has prutiy cereals and the purity juices (maybe 1 juice in 2 weeks) and he prefers his water. other than that, he eats what we eat and we gotta eat properly now coz of him (thanks my boy :P)
