Trying to conceive at 44 years old

My heart breaks reading your post. I am so sorry. I understand the pain of miscarriage. Toughest thing a lady has to ever go through. Give yourself some time to heal and take care of yourself.

So sad news... After going to my gynae appointment at 9 weeks, baby had no heartbeat and only measured 7 weeks and 1 day. 4 days later a second scan and HCG test showed that there was no hope and levels were dropping. My body did not miscarry naturally, and I went for an evacuation (or D&C) on the 29th of January. We had chromosomal tests done, and baby had trisomy 22 and wa not viable. It was a little girl (I knew it from the start). This has been the hardest thing I have ever gone through. As weird as it sounds, if I thought there was even a small chance of having a healthy baby, I would try again, but the risks are too high. Just taking one day at a time, and appreciating the children I am blessed to have. I have new respect for those amazing ladies out there who struggle with infertility and go through multiple miscarriages to make their dream of motherhood a reality. Xx

HI Mesh1401. It's going well so far, just a little nausea, but nothing too crazy. I only go for the test later this month (you have to be at least 9 weeks along), so I'll let you know how that goes. In terms of my diet, I went to a dietician, and no, it was not a low carb diet, just a balanced diet, with cutting out sugar and fats (low fat milk, low fat mayonnaise etc.). I also found that the dieticians are not expensive as I thought! It has been lifechanging, and my medical aid (discovery) covered the costs (until I ran out of funds )

How are you keeping? Hope your pregnancy is going smoothly. Are you happy with the test results?
Did you follow a low carb lifestyle? I have heard success stories of ladies on it. I havent tried it as yet cos I cannot give up my love for bread

Hi Mesh1401. I was quite overweight, and had been on a healthy eating plan since July, which resulted in me losing 10 kg's, and I've never been healthier (also exercising regularly). So nothing over and above that, but I do believe my change in lifestyle had something to do with it!

I am 40 and trying to get pregnant with my first for the last five years.
Did you take any supplements/ vitamins?

So just an update...we actively tried for a month or two, and then thought it would never happen, and our chances were so low. So we stopped trying actively, but by this last Monday, my period was late, and by yesterday still nothing. So I went and got a pregnancy test, and low and behold, I am pregnant! A strong 2nd line! I went and got another test that afternoon (the digital one), and it was also pregnant, 2-3 weeks. So I am about 4 to 5 weeks! We are in shock! Excited but shocked! I have booked an appointment with my gynae for the end of January, but also having the Harmony Test done (as recommended by my gynae at our original appointment), to check for any chromasomal abnormalities. Once we know that all is OK we can relax a bit and start planning for our new addition to the family!
