I hope you don't have to have to be induced then! Will think good thoughts for you.

I ALWAYS thought/knew I wanted the epidural. Now I'm less sure. I suppose it depends on if I can still walk around and do a water birth if I want as I'm quite liking the idea of that now.

What are you planning to do? AM the 1st what did you do?

I'm just scared I'll say I'll go without it and then midway through (when it's too late) be like, GIVE ME THE EPIDURAL. NOW! and now be able to get it. hahaha

I don't have any idea what to expect or quite how painful it will be either..

Hi

Yes u can get induced if needs be I am currently avoiding that so I have decided to wait a bit longer, they will give u an epidural if u ask for it and let ur midwife know early on that u would like an epidural, it's not something they will offer u, u have to ask. Don't know about the walking around during an epidural

Thanks so much for your responses ladies! I really appreciated it.

I am drawn to use either Xoli Makabane, Marilyn Sher (& her partner Vernica) or Karen Van der Merwe.

I'm debating seeing a Sandton Mediclinic gyn once (for R1800! ) just so I have seen someone there should I need to go there - but I suppose I'm not even guaranteed that doc will show up if I only see them once? I don't know what to do there..

I'm of course praying everything will go normally and I won't need the backup gynae anyway.

I didn't know you could deliver a breech baby via C-sec at Genesis now so that's super useful Vendah! What happens if you need to be induced? (ie at 41/42 weeks?) Can you have an epidural if you decide you want one using a midwife? Would you not be able to move around then or need to be in a bed only? (I always thought I wanted one but am not not sure what I want to do)

Any more reviews of Genesis and their midwives and gynaes??

Thanks again for all/any insight! I so appreciate it!!

Hi Mummy

I gave birth with both my babies at Genesis, one last January and the other in July this year. I used Xoli Makabane both times and she was great. I used different back up Gynes and to be honest I only saw them at my 36 week visits and I never needed them during birth. My 1st was Dr ... uhm I forgot but with this last one I saw Dr Dlakavu.

Sis Xoli is also extremely knowledgeable and answers all your questions and concerns that I didn't really have much questions for the Gyne except to see how my baby was doing on the 3d scan.

All in all, its a great facility and the Midwives on duty after you give birth are also quite helpful. Genesis is all I know and as I am bias. But I love how attentive everyone is.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jmaz

I am with genesis haven't given birth yet bt I am 41 weeks preg now, my gyni is doctor Dlakavu she is a great gyni bt not talkative bt she will gladly answer all ur questions. My midwife is Phindi and I LOVE HER very honest. Be prepared to pay cash for some things. They have changed one rule though u can give birth there via c-section if ur baby is breech . Ask ur medical aid how much they pay for the following codes gyni 0192 R700 nd 3617 R800 total for gyni R1500 per consultation. midwife consultation code Z34.9 88420 R300 midwife birth code 080.0 88399 R5800. You pay all this cash when you go there and medical aid has to refund u and most of the time they refund u less than what u paid, just call and give them those codes and ask how much they pay for each code. The only thing medical aid pays directly is the clinic charge which is around R30000. Hope this helps

Hi Ladies!

I'm new to Moomie though I've been stalking some posts here for the past couple of weeks.

I live in CPT but am moving to JNB next month. We're staying with my sister-in-law in October until we find a place - hopefully in Parkhurst/Rosebank/Melrose/Saxonworld/Athol/Parktown North etc areas.

I'm 21w2d preggies today and am now needing to find a new care provider for my pregnancy.

I was seeing a gynae here in CPT anyway but now I'm nearly convinced I want to see a midwife instead and I want to birth at Genesis (I always wanted nvd though I was thinking with epidural - now I'm considering going without it).

It's been a bit of a logistical nightmare with my medical aid so I'm still trying to figure a few things out. I'm on Momentum and need to use associated hospitals (though the gynae can now be non-associated). Evidently (I found out today) midwives don't count as specialists so she's getting me their rate on that.

Hubby and I had already been warming up to the idea of using a midwife and then we watched The Business of Being Born last night and felt even more like it was the way to go.

Now, I know I've found some reviews here and there on midwives and doctors but they all seem to be 2-5 years old so thought I'd start a new thread.

Please can you guys give me your midwife and backup gynae recommendations that deliver at Genesis??

Positive and negative feedback/stories. Pluses and minuses about delivering there?

The only thing that makes me nervous is that if I go into labor before 37 weeks or something causes a C-Sec to be needed to be schedules (does breech count or do they wait that out and do emergency C at Genesis) - I would need to go to an associated hospital on Momentum which means Sandton Mediclinic, Morningside Mediclinic or Brenthurst Clinic as those are the only nearby associated hospitals. None of the backup gynaes associated with Genesis practice at any of these hospitals though! So I'm still trying to figure out what to do about that.

Thanks for your help!
