Of course you want all that is needed and necessary for baby. You want IT ALL. But, next time when you’re expecting another little one, you won’t make these mistakes again of buying stuff you really don't need. 

A list of things I wish I didn’t buy (please note, the following items are the view of the writer, a subjective first-time mom with a maxed credit-card. Some people might indeed find nappy bins very useful):

Little outfits

There’s no point in all those cute little outfits. Especially those with buttons and bows and things. After the initial outfit changes, you grab what is easiest. And trust me – onesies are the way to go. With the three clips between the legs. Easy access for diaper changing, and baby is comfortable and relaxed.

A changing table

Personally, I wanted one so badly! All the creams and lotions and diapers and wipes and this and that each in their own little space. The reality? It wasn’t long before I just put a towel on the bed, with a pack of wet-wipes and bum cream always on my nightstand, it was easiest to unclip those three clips, diaper off, wiping clean, cream on the bum, new diaper, clip the clips, done. Baby is safe as the bed is huge and soft, and warm.

A baby bath

A wet baby is a slippery little thing. After a few hysterical shrieks, feeling baby slip from my hands, I said to myself this is IT, my nerves can’t handle this. So I got into the big bath with her. With her propped-up against me, there is no slippery escape into raging waters. Plus it is extra special bonding time. My toddler is almost two now, and bath-time with mom is the highlight of her day. We play, and sing, with some washing in-between.

That state-of-the-art nappy bin

It cost a fortune, and gobbled some dirty diapers in the beginning. But after a while it gets tiresome. It really is just much easier to throw it in a regular standard little bin, tipping it into the trash bin outside once a day. That goes for the harmless wee-diapers. That other specimen of diaper though, the nasty poo-diaper – see that as a get out of jail free card. Escaping for two minutes to the outside world to throw it away, check on the dog, taking in the clouds, while baby is having some me-time in her crib. If it’s nice out, it’s also a lekker excuse to take baba out with you for a quick stroll in the garden.

Baby shoes

So darn cute, but in my house, so darn useless. Baby did NOT want to wear shoes, and why should I make her? She can’t walk! She’s going nowhere. Those tiny little feet will stay clean, and warm, in her baby blanket. Plus, if it’s a cold day, she’s wearing one of those onesies with the closed feet any way. - Jana Cloete
