Breastfeeding your baby - a few tips from us Featured

You've heard it before. Breastfeeding is so easy. Much easier than bottle-feeding. So why are you struggling?

Breastfeeding can be a wonderful experience for mom and baby but it can be hard as well. It's sore in the beginning. If it's your first time you never know are you holding your baby in the right position or if you are suffocating your baby. Is he/she getting enough milk? There are so many things to worry about!

We give you a few tips to start you off on your journey:

Don't panic if it hurts in the beginning.

Breastfeeding tends to be painful in the beginning with raw and cracked nipples, sore boobs but all these are totally normal especially for first-time moms.

Moisturize your nipples

This is to prevent or heal chapped and painful nipples. You can use olive oil or lanolin cream. Nipple shields can be quite helpful and are used to protect sore nipples during breastfeeding.

Get yourself a good lactation consultant

They are worth more than gold in those first few days. Looks for a lactation consultant with a good reputation and someone that you feel a connection with. It's easier to trust one person on your breastfeeding journey than to listen to several people trying to be helpful but confusing you in the process.

Wear a comfortable bra

Invest in proper breastfeeding bra's. Your breasts are heavier and can become hard and sore when it's full of milk. You need a bit more support. There are bra's out there that makes it so easy to breastfeed. Don't let clothing get in the way of your breastfeeding.

Set up a comfy breastfeeding station

It can several hours of your day - especially in the beginning. You want to be comfortable and enjoy it. Some ideas are to set up your station in a comfy chair, with a CD player playing calm music, snacks and a bottle of water.

Feed, feed, feed

Your baby is your best ally in breastfeeding. Try and avoid pumping in the beginning, as this can change the supply and demand of your milk. Feed wherever you want, whenever you want. Follow your baby's lead and don't be afraid to breastfeed in public. There are beautiful wraps and scarves you can use if you want to cover up.

Keep hydrated

Breastfeeding takes a lot of work and you need to look after yourself. Drink enough water. If you get fed up of water, drink rooibos tea. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
