I'm also very excited to try cloth and have bought mostly 2nd hand covers and have made flats from old winter sheets.
The facebook groups and sacnu website is a great help.

Hey hun,

I;m not sure if you have had your baby yet but I plan on doing cloth from newborn. I have gotten 20 flats, 6 covers and 4 night nappies (fitteds) this all cost me just over R1000 I think (I bought from Biddykins), to me it is worth it because you can use the flats as boosters for the OSFM when you move onto those. I mixed my flats between hemp and bamboo. Baby due in 2 weeks and will let you know how it goes depending on if you have had bub yet or not.

Hi Simone, I am planning on using cloth, so can't give you actual experience feedback, but I have also been doing my homework.

Flats and covers will be your cheapest option for newborns and you can use the flats as booster when baby is older.
I came across a site where you can rent newborn cloth. I bought some 2nd hand diapers on the cloth nappy buy sell trade group on FB and it included 4 newborns, but it still looks too big imo. So I might just do flats anyways.

Good day Moomies!

I am expecting baby number 3, and am considering cloth this time around. I have done the homework and research with regards to the terms, types, brands and costs. My main reason for going cloth will be to save money. Therefore, if cloth is not a money saver for us, it will not really be an option. I have seen the websites that have done a lot of work with cost calculations and they all conclude that cloth saves money in the long run, and I agree - over 2 or 3 years there will be savings.

But how much will I save on a newborn, seeing that I can only use the nappies for 3 or maybe 4 months. (Expect if I use flats, and those covers will also be outgrown by 3/4 months.)

I calculate around R1800 - R2000 for the first few months' disposables. This is based on my own experience with how many disposables I have used on my two daughters, and the prices I see in the shops now. If I look at flats and Newborn covers and a few AIO Newborn nappies, my calculations are also around R2000 (and these are at some of the best priced brands I could find).

Any advise on this? And do you agree/disagree with my calculation for Newborn nappies for 3-4 months? Maybe you can help me see how this is a saving and not just the extra work? I assume one of the ways one can save is by selling the NB nappies after 4 months? But it this very popular(is there a big market for this, and how much will you get back?)

Thank you so much!!!!
Simone
