file Trying to get 7 week old to take a bottle

15 years 11 months ago #120525 by Bronz
Hey JudesMom

I fought with Graeme no end to take the bottle. I now have him at the point of taking TT and NUk bottles.

A couple of things that worked for us:

Hubby would feed him. He would not give in, I know it sounds cruel but Graeme would scream blue murder and hubby would just persist (ok too a limit, a point it became too much and I would have to feed).

Tricking him some times worked, where by I would start nursing then carefully and quickly take him off and pop the bottle in.

And what worked the best was feeding him before he registered that he was hungry.

We started off giving the bottle as a top up at 5/6 pm. He now takes the bottle at any time.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanx mommies for all the advise, Scarlett took the bottle after she woke up from her nap for about and hour, i think she was so hungry and didnt realise that it was the teat. But after she drank like 60ml's and realised what was in her mouth she started screaming. Tried again after that but she woudlnt take it.

But for 4 days in a row she takes it after her nap, she even drank about her 100ml, i tried in the morning when she wakes up but no luck,
But i am going to persist.

but how do i get ger onto more feeds, do i keep the breast away until she just takes the bottle?

I also have one of those bottle haters at home - my LG makes it very clear she prefers breast over silicone/ latex teats! She hated TT (teat seems way too big for her little mouth) and only takes a NUK bottle occasionally from DH if she 's in the right mood. Also no chance the dummy will stay in (no matter the brand). For us, it doesn't make a difference if I'm in the house or not and we've tried all the other tricks mentioned above. I think key is just to stay at it - DH tries every night when he gets home from work and it seems to be getting a little better each day. Eventually she'll have to take the darn bottle as I have to go back to work.

Good luck!

for me i would suggest you try the Tommee Tippee bottles - they are key for breastfed babies. the teat is rounded and soft like a boob ;)

also express breastmilk and feed her from the bottle... squeeze milk out of the teat to touch her mouth and lips and then put the bottle in her mouth. you must try

Hi there

My sister's baby refused to take any dummy or bottle in the beginning (she bought about 10 different types of dummies!!!!) and in the end she only took the Pigeon bottles and dummies after trying for more than a week.

I agree with the other mommies, first let somebody else (like granny or dad) give her bottle with expressed breastmilk and you should rather not be in the room (otherwise baby is going to want YOU with your milk and boob) ;)

What's in the bottle? Expressed milk will be easier in the beginning. As the ladies above say try to get someone else to give her the bottle with you out the room (better yet out the house). Babies pick up on moms emotions plus they will go for the boob which is a comfort source if you are nearby. Give it to her when she is hungry I.e when she would normally be breastfed. Also make sure the bottle is warm - 38-40 degrees. It is also sometimes helpful to rub some milk on the teat.

If she doesn't take it try again at the next feed etc. Maybe start with only a little expressed milk in the bottle rather than risk wastin bmilk as you cannot reuse the bottles. Good luck!
