question-circle Determining how much milk

Nelly,

I googled for the formula - the one I found was
(baby's weight x 125ml) / by feeds per day.
so for a 7kg baby feeding 5 times per day:
(7x125)/5 - 175 ml per bottle

This gave me a good guideline of where to start.

Willem born: 20 Aug 2010
Emily born: 5 March 2014

he weighs 10.2 kg now and pead is happy with the weight gain. i could never follow the fomula tin to determine the amout of milk because he drink one instead of 3.

WOW Sarah! Why is Skye drinking every 2 hours? I'd go crazy!!! I made up a 200ml bottle the other day, and he drank 180ml!

She's got a little tummy :D

She does however sleep through 7pm - 4:30am and puts herself to sleep for her naps which are 8 - 9am, 11 - 2 and 4 - 5pm. So I refuse to complain! She's also very efficient at the breast and only takes 10 - 15 minutes for a full feed.

Next time you are at the shop, have a look on a tin of formula and see what the guideline is for your child's age - you can take it frm there and then either up or decrease the amount according to your child's needs.

Otherwise there is a formula that clinics work on - they work on baby's weight and the number of times baby feeds, perhaps give your clinic a call

Skye is 3 months old and will drink 70 - 100ml expressed milk on the odd occasion I give her a bottle. She does nurse every 2 hours :D

Nelly it is hard to say. I suggest you make up say 150ml as a test feed and see how much lo drinks from the bottle and then give a bit more than that.

Sad to waste expressed milk so maybe express into small freezer bags for them and they can take out what they need to use or you will end up wasting too much.

For eg. I would make up 120ml of formula and dylan would drink 70mls. He gradually increased the amounts until he would take 200ml.

Have you done a test feed. I went to the clinic and they weighed Dylan before I breastfed him, then I fed him at the clinic and they weighed him again. It gave a fair indication of how much he drank at a time.
