question-circle changing from breastmilk to formula

Nelly, honestly - you should be making the decisions on what/how to feed your baby, not his daymom. She must go with whatever you feel is best for him. She can obviously give advise based on what she sees during the day with him, but ultimately, you get to make the decisions.

My baby is formula fed, but that's because I made the decision to formula feed. If you want to breastfeed, don't stop because his daymom feels he is not getting enough milk. The theory that breastmilk is "not enough" for babies is really not true. If yur paed is happy with his growth, then there is nothing to be concerned about. If your boy is a bit more hungry, maybe increase his solids. If he has been getting 1 tablesppon of solids twice a day since he was 4 months, then I would definitely say it is time to increase that. He could be hungry, but not because your breastmilk is not enough, but it could rather be because he is ready to increase his solid food intake. Perhaps introduce lunch now as well.

Good luck.

Absolute cr@p about needing the formula. If that were the case we'd l have starved as kids as would our parents and grandparents. I would def say give more solids though if baby is hungry. By 5m James was on a decent sizes bowl of cereal in the am between his two morning feeds and a cup of sweet potato or butternut at around 5ish. The new research is indicating solids should start between 4 and 6m so you don't need to be too hesitant.

OK but why don't you just send more breastmilk then? At the end of the day it's your baby so you shouldn't be shy to tell her what to do. Maybe she just expect him to still sleep more like they do when they are little.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! (-:

He's been on solids (tablespoon twice a day - porridge morning veg evening) since 4 months. This morning she decided to double it, as he asks for more! As I have noticed too.

So I really don't know what to do. I also don't want to tell her what to do, as what ever is easiest for is better. She's apparently splitting his one bottle with a half hour gap, because he cries earlier than his 4 hour gap!

Nelly if your paed is happy with your child's growth I can't see a problem here. Your breastmilk should be filling enough. I recently had a prem baby (born at 32 weeks) and everyone kept telling me that I should add formula so he can pick up weight faster, well I didn't and when I went to the paed last week, he picked up nearly 250g per week (he should have picked up at least 150g per week) and that only on breastmilk. I see your baby is nearly 6 months old, so maybe it's soon time to start introducing solids perhaps?

Hi ladies, my lb's daymom is insistant that I start giving him formula, saying that my breastmilk isn't enough for him and that he's very hungry in the day. My paed says 200mls breastmilk is more than enough, so does the midwife, and when I feed him, he only takes max 210mls! She says the breastmilk itself (not quantity) isn't filling enough? Do you agree with this? Should I start on formula? I'm having a hard time giving up breast feeding!
