I started solids at 5.5 months as well, Paige has never had cereals and we didn't go the puree route, she ate what we ate, minus the salt... She has a very healthy appetite now and we have always eaten as a family rather than having to feed her.

Excuse the ignorance... what is baby led weaning?

Rice cereal = highly refined carbohydrate that as adults we are told to avoid. For millenia babies survived without it, fruit and veg are far superior.
I did baby led weaning, and only gave cereal (never rice cereal - I used pronutro) when lazy or in a rush. James was about 9months when he first had any cereal at all!

The truth is rice cereal came about when breastfeeding rates were at their lowest, formula was nothing more than condensed milk and babies were poorly nourished, needing somethin extra. It caught on and the baby food manufactures continue to punt it despite the fact that infant nutrition has come a LONG way! (Type White out into google)

I started with rice cereals and after 4 days introduced single vegetables. I wasn't particularly pro rice or pro vegetables. I introduced new single vegetables as I went along. And this was at 5 months

I did rice cereal first but a of the research I have done since makes me want to do veggies and (at least partial) baby led weaning for future babies.

I started with Rice cereal at 4months, then introduced single veggies from 5months.
