I completely agree with GW. We have a vested interest in our own children, and they sense it, and take advantage of it. My daughter is a pretty fussy eater at home - she eats, but only specific things - like plain spaghetti with tomato sauce. She spent the evening at a friends house and she ate a BOBOTIE pancake - she apparently wolfed it down. I can't get meat down her throat for love nor money!!
I also agree that if the purity is on offer - he's probably going to refuse anything else - although I TOTALLY get why you give it to him.
Good luck. And like Vix said - see the silver lining - at least now you can rule out sensory problems causing the eating problems!!

Kids are so quick to sense a mothers rising blood pressure. If they sense they have found one of your "buttons" they keep pushing them!!

Try not to make a scene and stay as neutral as possible. Just take the food away after a while if it is clear he is not interested. No child will starve himself. It is actually quite surprising how little they need to thrive!

Meags,

it's probably because he sees his peers do it at creche.

i had similar issues with C, although not as bad with food but with talking also until he started creche, then suddenly he did all sorts of things.

I think it must be tough being the 1st child because the only people you have to copy are like 5 times your size and they act differently and expect you to just know what to do. I have noticed the tweenies get stuff much quicker because they watch C doing it.

try not to stress yourself too much. the good news is he clearly doesn't have an eating or sensory disorder if he is doing all these things at creche.

Shame Meags you really have had it rough with Matthieu!

I wouldn't be too worried peer pressure is big with babies... most babies / childres eat better at creche where they watch the other little ones eat and imitate them.

What i would suggest is seriously just put him in his highchair in front of food (prefererably with one of those bowls with the suction cup under) and leave him to it while you and DH eat. Then if he hasnt helped himself to the food by the time you are done, go feed him. if he has started playing with it then leave him to it.

Feed him his purity after as desert if you absolutely must, but if he is eating well at chreche what you really should be doing is just offering the rice to him and if he doesn't want it leave it and offer it again later until eventualy he does take it.

If he knows that by performing he will get the purity, then he will hold out until it is given to him. I guarantee you that at the creche if he doesn't take whats offered it is assumed he isn't hungry and he doesn't get another option. Thats why he eats whats on offer there and only purity at home.

But relax as long as he is eating, there is no problem.

Ladies - most of you know I have had feeding issues with Matthieu from birth.

It is just NOT getting any better!!!!!!!!!

HOWEVER...............................................
It seems to mainly be with me

He started at creche today and they said he happily ate rice and chicken. with me he will eat puree (lots of it) but any "normal" food he spits out and wont chew or swallow (a very rare occassion if he does)

So for dinner I made rice and chicken and he screamed and threw his usual tantrum! They said at creche he even dug his hands into the food and fed himself (which he NEVER does)

I have tried to just put food on his tray table for him to eat on his own, I have given finger foods, tried a variety of spoons and forks.

Why will he eat normal food with other people and not with me? What am I doing wrong??????
