question-circle Your experiences with Vallergen

Hi Claire_bear!

Hope you are doing well.

My GP described it for my LG for teething pain around 2 years old, since she had quite bad teething pain especially during the night. He did prescribed a much lower dose than the actual dose I remember. It is actually a type of antihistiamine but causes drowsiness and is often used as a Pre-operation sedative as well.

I also heard horror stories and it is a strong medication. My experience was that it was crucial to get the dosage right. I sometimes gave her half the dose the doctor recommended (not wanting to give her too much) and I found that if you give too little it just causes her to become anxious and confused but doesn't actually fall asleep and settle. Sometimes it seemed to work very well and she would settle and other times it just didn't help much, sometimes I actually felt that it made her feel worse.

However I know it is commonly prescribed for small children for international flights. I know my sister in law gave it to both her children when traveling from Canada to South Africa (her husband is a GP).

I think it is a very personal choice. A very long flight with a pre-school kid with no sleep will be difficult for the child, the parents and the rest of the passengers on the flight...However it is still your choice, if you feel that you are going to be stressed about the side-effects to the point where you are having major anxiety it is probably not a good idea.

My pharmacist assured me that it is safe and that the cases where children died was due to neglegence on the parents side due to wrong dosage. Don't know if this is true.

Hi ladies.

Have any of you had experiences with your child on Vallergen? Any symptoms or recommendations you can give me?

My hubby and I and 2 year old LG are flying to Scotland this year... 14 hour flight... and we leave at MIDNIGHT! So Paed prescribed Vallergen to help LG sleep through, but I have noticed its a schedule 5 medicine! Thats a little hectic.

I have heard a few horror stories about these sedative medicinies. Could you ladies maybe shed some light on the experiences?

When i flew with my LG to PTA in March, it was also a late flight, and I only gave her rescue remedy. While she stayed calm throughout the short flight, she didnt ever fall asleep.

so im a little uncertain, not sure what to do for the next flight... :S
