file Ideas for feeding a fussy 20 month old...?

Hi Tanz,

I understand how frustrating it can be when your little ones are picky eaters. A child’s fussy eating may lead to nutritional gaps which may affect growth, and it can be difficult as a mom to make sure your kids are getting the proper nutrients in their meals. If you are interested in attending a complimentary talk on child nutrition with a trained dietitian, please contact me at tory@haveyouheard.co.za so that I can send you the invitation and the event details.

Events will be held at various venues in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from mid-September until mid-October 2013.

Good luck :)
Kind Regards,
Tory

Tanz, I have this week tried so many recipes from Anabel Karmel's book (you can google her, think website is www.anabelkarmel.com) and my children flat-out refuse to eat it. Just now, Sion held a piece of the "hidden veg" pasta sauce on his fork, scrutinized it for like five minutes, decided he "smells" a vegetable, made a spitting out gesture with his mouth and said "ga".

So ja.

I think ALL children are inherently opposed to veggies. I don't know why. So it's not a case of just vol fiemies. I think they all go through that stage but it's sort of our responsibility to expose them to different smells, tastes and textures.

Wow Huggles, I think you should come live with me as you have advice for every problem that seems huge to me!!

I have never thought of grating the veggies...

What's your take on sweets and snacks during the day?

Deja, any websites where I can also get some ideas?

Thanks again ladies...

PS. Isn't hiding the veggies kind of encouraging them not to eat them or to be "vol fiemies" when they are given it? I was raised sort of, if you don't want to eat it then stay hungry, or as jy sê jy wil dit nie he ni, kry jy 2 skeppies...

Tanz, it sounds to me as if he eats great! My children ONLY eat their veggies when it is hidden or in a sauce or stew. \

A bolognaise with tomato, garlic, onion, grated baby marrow and carrot, for example, can also work nicely.

There's a book, by Annabel Karmell, that is fantastic with healthy recipes for children.

Although Huggles' ideas sounds much better. :-)

My son is 21 months so very similar age. I swear his favourite food is rice crazy child. I tend to put rice, some small cut up chicken pieces, and a bit of frozen mixed veg in a pot and cook. Then I dish that up into small bakkies and keep it in the freezer as "emergency meals" (meaning I don't have time to make him a decent meal). He loves them!

I'm not at all a fan of a pile of veggies on my plate, so I always cut/chop/grate them and add them to my meals. Mince is a great one to hide veggies in. The more finely you grate them the less noticeable they are.

What I also did once was a type of macaroni cheese. But for the sauce I used homemade bone broth (stock) and add muchrooms and spinach and rice milk powder to get it semi creamy/milky and then I blitzed it up so it was a smooth sauce. It was super yummy and even my dh commented on how nice the sauce was. And best of all it had SPINACH in it!

You could also make a batch of meatballs and hide grated veg in those. Freeze them and haul them out as you need them.

Spaggheti bolognaise is great for hiding grated up veg in. I usually add carrots, baby marrow, mushrooms and butternut. The butternut cooks soft and mixes in so you can't see it, and the other stuff you grate finely so you have no idea it's even there when it's all cooked up.
And bolognaise is great for freezing so you could cook a big batch and freeze it so after work you just have to make the spagghetti.

Hi ladies,

My 20 month old is a real "rys, vleis en aartappels" child. He eats pasta, viennas, cottage pie etc. He doesnt seem to be a fan of just cooked veggies, although he eats them when they are in a stew for example... But I still feel like maybe he needs to eat a little healthier?

Any ideas on what I can cook fast (after work) that he would eat?

Your help is appreciated...
