Hi Adel

Have you ever considered changing to a Soya based formula?

My boy had severe colic while I was breastfeeding we changed him to formula and he was a different baby no crying no reflux.

Hope you find something that helps.

Hi,

I'm attaching a great summary of different kinds of formula for you, the article is quite old already, but still relevant and a great reference. Good luck!

Hi Adel

Karmie is right. My boy is severely allergic to cow's milk protein with severe reflux. Luckily he was diagnosed quite quickly after he ended up back in the NICU at 3 weeks old. He reacts to lactose, but that is because lactose still contains a tiny bit of the cow's milk protein. Our pediatrician has put him on Similac Allementum, but that is extremely expensive (R230 a 400 gram tin). There was a day night difference in him. We changed to Pepticate (R160 a 400 gram tin) when he was 6 months old. Pepticate is also extensively hydrolyzed formula like the Allementum, just different brands. Our boy is now 9 months old and thriving. The formula is very expensive, but rather that then a sick screaming baby. Then there is the soya route, although I heard it is not good to give soya before 6 months, unfortunately, when you have a cow's milk allergy, you are very likely to react to soya.

We used Nexium, but managed to wean him off it at 7 months. Hang in there. I know exactly how that projectile vomiting feels like. If you need more advice, you welcome to ask me.

I am sorry that you and baby are going through this Adel

It is terrible, my first LG had reflux and it was not an easy road. We ended up putting her on medication, Nexium.

We also found a definite link between reflux and cow's milk. Not so much the lactose, but the cow's milk protein.

I breastfed so I cut out all dairy from my diet which helped a lot.

We breastfed when reflux was at its worst and we only gave her Nan HA when she was 10 months old, and at that point I think she outgrew the reflux. We did hear good things about the Nan HA, apparently the cow's milk protein is modified so that the baby's body does not have an allergic reaction.

For some reflux babies it helps if you keep them upright after feeding, it did not really helped all that much for us though. All you can do is hold them close and try to comfort them.

Sorry for not being able to help that much, all I can say is it does get better

Any suggestions on what formula works best with lactose intolerance and reflux. I changed lb to lactose free Nan at 4 weeks. Still with lots of crying after feedings and through the day we think he has silent reflux as well. I tried Novalac AR and he was much better but then the symptoms of lactose intolerance were back. So lb is 9 weeks now. Trying Nan HA now, but reflux seems still to be a big problem!!! What to do!!!
