question-circle Breastfeeding but going away for a week

Hi Faffymum

About two weeks ago I had to go to Spain for a week. My baby is now 8 months old (seven months at the time) and I also pumped while away.

I am not going to sugarcoat it, it was not glamorous at all (but few things about motherhood are right!). I was pumping in airports, on airplane bathrooms, hotels, and offices. I pumped every opportunity I could get and I also set my alarm to pump at night. I tried to stick to the normal feeding schedule as much as possible.

Best tip, set an alarm for every pumping session, especially if you are prone to plugged ducts. I lost track of time on a couple of occasions, and I was so engorged.

I am off to JHB on Thursday for a week, so I have to do this all over again. Luckily not internationally, but still its not fun.

I will be thinking of you!

thanks for the advice :)
I think I will try to pump as often as possible. I am quite prone to getting lumps if baby skips a feed or something but he usually sorts it out for me. So hopefully the pump will be as effective.
I will aim for every 3 - 4 hours I think and if my supply drops, hopefully baby can bring it back up when I get back.

Hi Faffy

Do you have feeding and pumping routine with baby currently? I would think that follow that same pattern as much as possible for the week you away to keep the flow going, if you in meetings etc it will be hard to keep to a schedule, so ideally to prevent the build up, and if you can't keep to babies/pump current times, maybe express before you need to go for your meetings. seminars, or if you out find out when is break time so you can anticipate how long between, express, and think about how you gonna store that milk or what?

I found that within an hour if I let the milk really fill up, it started to hurt but never formed lumps, it takes a lot of clogging to form lumps as far as I know, but I could be wrong!!

Shew all the best I hope you find a routine to help you here, but hats off to you for continuing your spirit to continue breast feeding even though you not with baby!!!

Hi mommies.

I am going away for a week to Mauritius with work and I am still breastfeeding my 4.5 month old. I am planning to pump while away. What would you suggest is best amount of pumping frequency to prevent lumps. If I get a lump, when should I freak out and run to hospital?

Feeling nervous.
