My oldest, I started on rice cereal from about three months, because my mother-in-law said my baby was hungry. I started her on veg from about six months, not purity, fresh boiled veg, because back then only lazy moms gave their children purity, and she didn't like it on the odd occassion that I give it to her. She did not get sick, she stopped crying and slept better because she wasn't hungry all the time any more. My second I only started on Rice cereal at about 4.5 months. Oh, and I gave him Purity and he loved it, from six months.

I skipped the purees and cereals and went straight for pieces of food close to 6 months of age (no added sugar or salt, just fresh fruit, veggies and home-cooked meals) - you can read about my journey with baby-led weaning, there's a thread about it here on feeding and nutrition.

We all do things differently. They suggest leaving fruit till later or kids won't eat veg.

I started with rice cereal but moved to veg soon after and I used pruee but only because we weaned slowly from 4 months.

Mom of Dylan and Partner to Joerg. We live in the Beautiful Pringle Bay which is along the Whale coast, Cape.

Thanks you guys, that really helped me a lot.. I will hold off from any solids. When I start, what is the best food for baby that is starting solids, do I start with fruits / vege purity or cereals?

Babies are ready for solids when they can actually pick up pieces of food and feed themselves, which happens at around 6 months. Waking at night isn't an indication of a need for 'solids' and in all fairness there isn't really a reason to feed your baby purees and cereals at all.

I know someone will disagree but I started real food at 5.5 months when my LG picked up food, put it in her mouth and chewed. No purees, no jucky cereals.

If you do decided to start solids early it will just pass straight through because their tummies just aren't ready, the only reason you can't clearly see this (as with pieces of food) is because purees already look like poo!

:) Go with what your gut tells you mommy, forget what every other good intentioned "I've raised 10 kids"-person out there tells you to do!
