file Breastfeeding being downplayed

I don't understand when so many hospitals are "pro-breastfeeding" then they still talk nonsense about the babies must receive a top-up and crap like that.

I think if you really, really want to breastfeed, you can. (There are certain cases where the moms just don't have enough milk, though).

I was also very fortunate to have an amazing breastfeeding consultant. I phoned her every single morning and she gave me my "plan" for the day. Even though my milk supply was sometimes low, my nipples hurt like hell, my boobs got lumps and I had to have physio, I have NEVER given in to formula. To me, that means the end of breastfeeding, because once you give formula, your milk supply decreases and it becomes a vicious cycle.

Since I am a journalist, I had to attend a presentation made by the government peadiatrician this week. What he said was so interesting. They have about 10 newborn babies that die within the first month of their lives every month. In June it was 22 babies. Most of these babies die of malnutrition or being underweight. Many other factors contribute as well but he said formula must be banned in all clinics, because it discourages a culture of breastfeeding. I tend to agree. He also said many of those babies could have been saved if they received breastmilk.

Aspoestertjie, I wish I was there to help you. They put so much pressure on you in hospital to get your baby to latch and is the baby getting enough milk etc. They should just LEAVE you to sort it out yourself. I had a nurse come and WAKE ME AND BABY at 2AM AT NIGHT, undress my baby and stab a needle into her heel to see if her "bloodsugar" was fine. (It was off course fine but then she was awake and cried the whole night.) They just wanted me to give her formula but I think they saw I was a force to be reckoned with.

I didn't even have formula in my house and when by night three my milk hasn't yet come in and my baby was crying, I was stressing. But my breastfeeding consultant told me to relax, have a long bath and drink a cup of tea. It came in soon after that. :)

Breastfeeding is the best! I believe that some women just want the easy way out! I'm still breastfeeding my boy! Hy is now 1 year and 1 wekk old! I want to stop, because hy is eating my up! LOL
Personal experience: Breastfed babies are much more healthier! Luwan never been sick or went to the docter, because of whatever! He just went for his check-ups!

I truely think in Hospitals they must encourage mom's to breastfed! I saw that they also want the easy way ot give babies formula. I just said to them I will breastfed my LO.

But still, it is your own choice! If you want to make bottles at night, go for it! :-)

Support is key. In my case, I am sure I would have been breastfeeding K for a long time if I had the right information and help.

I am bottle feeding and its such a schlep sterilising bottles and make formula at night. Luckily now K does not drink at night.

I am also a lazy bum so next time am adamant that I wont be sterilising bottles again!

This is such a catch 22 situation. Because bottle feeding is so prevalent, there is so little true support around. In breasfeeding cultures where your moms and aunties etc all breastfed you would never get the poor information/support and you would be more likely to breastfeed.

Maternity wards are often the worst (especially private) because they do topups, use dummys etc...

One thing I wish moms were told: Sure the nurse can feed at night, but when you get home you have to get up and mix/warm the formula. James comes into bed with me, gets put on the boob and I go back to sleep while he eats(well not anymore because he is finally sleeping through (10-5))

I have no problem with what each person chooses to do, you know what is best for you and your baby.

But what gets to me is when some one goes on about how great breast feeding is and that they plan to do it. But then take a tin of formula and bottles to the hospital and end up bottle feeding, the excuse being they needed to sleep. I have heard this twice, the last one is still in hospital. I feel like telling her to wait until she is out of hospital as baby will probably wake every few hours, she has to still make the bottle and there is no nurse.

I totally agree that BREAST is BEST and that many many moms just bottle feed for convenience sake. NO OFFENSE, please if you're offended by my opinion (which seems to be the case for some people, every time I boice an opinion) just skip my reply and read the one below mine, okay.

Mommies should not be discouraged if it seems more difficult than what they expected... It will get easier, all it takes is practice.

I totally agree.

I think we are prepared to give second best for the sake of a better nights sleep which I understand, but I just couldn't do it so I demand fed and it was really tough, but Dylan thrived on breast milk.

Yes I couldn't go out for long or had to bf in a room at the shops etc, but it is such a short time really that we are inconvenienced and what a worthwhile one at that.

You can see how he dropped weight on his growth chart when I changed to formula.

I was fortunate to have a paed who supported me breastfeeding even though we chose to top up initially. It was a joint decision on our part for Dylan's sake and a lactation consultant showed me how to cup feed him the formula after each feed.

My gynae was so chuffed that I breastfed despite what I went through. I guess I was totally determined to get something right as everything else hadn't gone according to plan.

Oh and I am lazy. I hated getting up and doing bottles etc.

I had a breastfeeding clinic that were amazing to me and a partner who insisted I breastfeed.

Support is key.

If you do choose not to then that is fine by me. Honestly but still try to encourage women to breastfeed where they can.

Formula is not the soloution to getting your baby to sleep longer.
