question-circle when to start solid???????????

Current research says babies should only start solids at about 6 months, up untill 1994 the accepted age was 4 months. I think 3 months is too early... (apparently the earlier you start the more at risk for allergies you are)
As long as she is gaining weight and having anough poo/wee nappies a day she is getting anough food and is probably crying because of something else (BTW most babies cry on average 3 hours a day, this is considered normal!)

My friend thought that introducing solids would stop the crying - its made no diference whatsoever:)

Hi Hope

I started 1 teaspoon of cereal in the evenings until 4 months when we added another teaspoon of cereal and 1st fruit in the morning.

We did start early, but have never loked back. My LG took it wonderfully amd has never not eaten a meal. She loves her food, and at 8 months enjoys messy play with peices of fruit, and loves to knaw on rusks.

My personal theory is not at all scientific but based on watching my own kids, those of friends, family and many around me who I interacted with on a repetitive basis is that if and when they can sit unassisted then they are probably ready to start solids (as I said not scientific   )

- I observed that though 6 months is the generally stated 'solids starting' marker some babies are definitely ready earlier and others just don't take to solids till a month or 2 later - based on that time when they start actually reaching out for food and trying to interact to get some - not sitting back placidly waiting for each spoonful and spitting most of it out. When they show an indication of wanting real food they seem to handle it better (eating, swallowing, no gagging and not getting cramps or constipated from it)

Hi Hope,

I do think 3 months are a bit early to start solids. Our moms would disagree... But research does suggest their bodies aren't ready to cope with it yet.

I must admit, I myself started my LB early. But in retrospect I would have waited till at least 4 months.

Try to BF for longer on one boob (if you are BFding) so that baby can get more of the hind milk that fills them up.

When you do start solids, rice cereal is nice. Mix one teaspoon with the milk you use (Breast if you are BFing) and make it very watery. Then just feed her a little at a time. If she gets one teaspoon per meal (one meal per day at first, increase when she needs more) that is fine.

Don't push her to eat if she is not ready yet. Don't get upset if she spits it out. She does not need it yet, you just want to start experimenting.
