I gave birth via C-section in January this year at Durbanville Medi-clinic. The most expensive of this whole experience is the hospital stay. I was in hospital for 3 nights and that cost me R30 000. The gynie was R5800, the spinal was R1800, the pediatrician was R1200. So I honestly do not think a c-sec is that much more expensive than normal birth say that there is no complications with either type of birth. Giving birth in a private hospital is an expensive story either way.....oh, and the gynie's theatre assistant charged R600.

Hasie that's a very good point.
Baby is covered from day 1 so even if u just take out a basic hospital plan (with gap cover) so you know baby is covered you have no idea how valuable that can be.
Just to give u an example (And I know I'm one of few and far between so this isnt to scare you) but my daughter had heart surgery at 8 days old and has had 2 more since then, and each hospital stay excluding specialists costs around R90 000.00 and you can add another R50 000 for specialists.

First angel resting 25/06/2009 stayed with us a short 7 weeks but we still miss you.

Early this year a client of mine found out prices from a few different hospitals. Most Netcare hospitals charged around R18000 payable before the birth of the baby and R28000 and up for c-sections depending on whether you have any complications. These prices does NOT include the gyni, anesthesiologist or pediatrician.

A homebirth would cost you around R6000 for the midwife, R2000 for a doula and R1000 for a birth pool (pool and doula are entirely optional). You would still need to register with a hospital (private or goverment) incase you need to transfer. And if you would transfer to a private hospital, you will need to have the cash for a c-section ready.

It is worthwhile to get a medical aid while you are pregnant that will cover the baby once he / she is born, because if your baba for some reason needs to go into NICU, you need to put down R55000 before the transfer.

I hope this helps to give you and idea. But the hospital will be able to help you with their prices.

The hospital will be able to send you their full prices for both natural and ceserean delivery and 2 years ago a csec was around 28K.
There's also specialist fees to consider such as anaethetist, paediatrician (who comes every day to check on baby) and gynae who comes every day to check on mommy.
Ofcourse the main risk is if baby needs to spend any time in ICU or under lights for jaundice.

You can look at Mowbray maternity for natural birth, and if u need a emergency csec you go across to their government section for that. There aren't any other places who do this unfortunately, perhaps by the time the next babies are born we'll be lucky enough!
Government hospitals will not allow an elective csec unless its an emergency and with natural birth you have to go home the same day and the cost is calculated according to your & hubby's income bracket and you have to go to a hospital within your area eg Karl Bremer will take from Bellville / Parow but not from Kraaifontein.

Hi there

Are you looking to go natural, normal or c-section. A totally natural birth, with no epidural can cost around R13000 - this is because there are no anesthesiologist fees - and your stay in hospital after a natural birth is minimal, only about 2 days (if everything goes as it should)....

For a normal delivery - with an epidural - you would have to factor in the nesthesiologist fees... not too sure what that could cost... However your stay in hospital should not be that long either...

The most expensive, and preferred choice of most doctors, is a c-section. Based on what friends have told me this can range anything between R25 000 and R40 000, depending on how long you would have to stay in hospital. And this is normally around 4 days...
