Congrats on your twins Sakina. Hope they are well. Thanks for the feedback regarding your stay at Umhlanga Hospital as I also booked there and was a bit worried regarding the care, i have had mixed reviews from friends. Who is your gynae?
Take care. :)

Went into prem labour at 31 weeks-staff and care were excellent. Am still in hospital as a boarder mum as babies in NICU and cannot find a single fault with the staff or level of care. They are experienced, patient and extremely helpful. I will definitely recommend Umhlanga Hospital without hesitation to prospective mums.

I had my LB 3 years ago at Umhlanga and I cannot say that my experience was the greatest. I found the day staff to be ok but the night not so much.

I had to have an emergency c-section (after 28 hours of labour) so it happened in the evening and was wheeled up to my room at about 22:30. They told my husband that he needed to leave which I really was not happy about as everything was so overwhelming. They then asked me if I wanted to feed baby and I was like Im not too sure how to. They were not helpful at all, no help was given. I was pretty out of it so they in quite an abrupt way said that they would give him a bottle which in the state I was feeling at that point allowed it. The next morning, at around 9:45 I buzzed them as I still had not seen my baby.

The nurse that helped during the day with feeding was amazing, she was very patient. The one at night, was terrible. I remember it was just before 8pm (when hubby has to leave) and my LB was battling to latch so instead of letting me remove him the right way she pulled him off my boob. It was excruciating. It felt like my nipple had been ripped off. I was in tears, and this stupid security guard was rushing my husband out which irked both of us. It was just a terrible experience.

Now that I think about it, they never did bring my LB to me during the course of the night for feeds so they were obviously giving him a bottle. Breastfeeding never worked for us after that. I could only manage 4 weeks as LB would only latch with a shield (which is not nice) , obviously used to a teat and I was just not producing enough milk.

My experience was not a great one and maybe it was a once off.

Im definitely not having my baby there this time round. Im having it at Alberlito which looks amazing and honestly have not heard one bad thing about it.

Good luck with your choice.

Have personally used Westville, they allowed you to room in or leave baby in nursery (your preference). They were also very encouraging with breastfeeding.

My friend delivered at Umhlanga twice (c sections both times) and found the experience similar. In fact for her second c section (which was planned unlike the first) they allowed her to start breastfeeding in recovery/before baby was given a bath etc.

Also both she and I had private rooms so could have our partners there at all times (both hospitals). Not sure if its the same if you in a general ward.

May you have a healthy set of twins إنشاء الله.

Muhammad Aaqil Ameer (my Nur-ul-Ain)

(06/12/10 via emergency c section)

Expecting number 2:) Due February 2013.

Hi. I'm 27 weeks pregnant with twins and am considering Umhlanga hospital for my birth-probably c/s. Has anybody used that hospital? Please for me feedback regarding nursing care, If they encourage breast feeding actively, encourage rooming in with te baby etc... Quite nerve wrecking.
