file Genesis clinic- Questions about the process

Hi Niki,

I had my LB at Genesis 2 years ago - had to have a c-sec though.

During my entire pregnancy I only saw a gynea 3 times. For the important scans, at 13 weeks and 20 weeks, and then a last checkup at 36 weeks. I saw the midwive in-between for check-ups.

I used Dr Mia for as my back-up gynea (and he did my c-sec in the end), great gynea, but VERY busy. Dr Maasdorp was assisting him at that point, and I saw him for my 36 week check-up (Dr Mia had an emergency c-sec - literally ran out the door as I was about to walk in ;)).
I personally liked both of them, no negatives at all ;). Even though Dr Mia was very busy, and his appointments were running late, he still took his time. He talked to us, answered all our question, took his time with the scan, explaining everything as he went along. I think my one appontment lasted nearly an hour!! and this with a full waiting room.

1 & 2. I know there are moomie's that have seen them (and the midwives) a lot more recent than me, so I will leave the recommendations up to them ;)

3. At your 36 week checkup, the gynea need to give you an all-clear for natural birth. If there are any concerns at this stage, they might refer you to a hospital instead (they only do low-risk births, as they dont have a NICU). Also, if you go into labour ealry (think its before 36 weeks, but just confirm) you should also go to the hospital instead.

If you labour at genesis, and end up needing a c-sec after-all, they will do the c-sec at genesis. They have a fully equiped theater on-site. If baba needs to stay in NICU for any reason, they will stabilize baba at genesis, but then transfer to Parklands (which is apparently very close).

Hi Ladies,

I know there have been previous threads about Genesis, but I need a bit more specific info, so hope you dont mind me starting a new thread.

First a bit about my pregnancy. I am 14 weeks now with my second child (first daughter was born naturally , using Hypnobirthing) at Sandton Medi Clinic with a great Gynea, but I didn't like the hospital feel and wanted to go the Genesis route this time. A few weeks ago I landed up in hospital with a kidney stone ( so large they had to remove it with a laser ( while I was 11 weeks pregnant) I have seen my Gynea for the 12 week check up and baby is happy and healthy and the Dr says the kidney stones dont put the pregnancy at risk, it was just bad timing and bad luck. The urologist says there are still kidney stones in my kidney but they are still attached and not bothering me so we leave them until after the baby is born.

Now I am feeling a bit scared about moving away from a hospital environment in case I need the support for another kidney stone. but still not ready to give up on Genesis. I am going to the open day on 8 December and phoned to make an appointment with Dr Mia, could only get my first appointment with him for when I am 30 weeks.

My questions:

1. Do you think its too late to see a back up gynea at 30 weeks ? I will continue to see my current gynea until then and pick a midwife, should I rather make an appointment to see Dr Massdorp, any recommendations on him?
2. Any recommendations in terms of Midwives ?
3. What happens if baby doesn't turn and you cant give birth naturally, do they just do the C section at Genesis ( I know chances are that baby will turn)

any other advise would be great,

Thanks
Niki
