I'm a doula in Cape Town and I do know of 2 phenominal doulas in Durbs.
A doula is there to support the expectant couple in their pregnancy, labour and immediate postnatal period in a holistic way. She understands that pregnancy and birth is a key life event and that this period should be cherished and supported so that the woman feels at her best, physically, emotionally, spritually on her path to becoming a mother.
Doula fees range from R2000 - R3000, depending on your doulas experience and qualification. This is unfortnately not covered by medical aids (with the exception of FedHealth) It is of the utmost imprtance that you shop around for a doula that suits you! A doula is invaluable on the day of labour as your advocate, emotional & physical support as part of your birth team and she can help you navigate the medical jargon and procedures before, during after birth so that you are well informed and able to advocate for yourself. You can use a doula for ANY birth scenario - unassisted birth, homebirth waterbirth - midwife or gynae birth, epidural birth emergency or elective csection.
She can assist you and your baby with skin to skin immediatley after the birth as well as help with the 1st latch/breastfeed and then she will also do a postnatal visit at your home afterwards to help debrief about the birth, assist with more practical thing like baby bathing, breastfeeding, and postnatal self care. She can also provide your with resources in your area to things like, breastfeeding and other support groups, antenatal classes, mum and baby groups, etc.
You can try Nicole Maurel on 072 702 6728 or Virginia Oosthuizen on 084 550 7218
All the best.
