Hi Taz

I also basically chose a gynae according to what I could afford because I found a lot of doctors were charging 200% over medical aid rates! I was at CTMC with Dr. Gaertner, he was OK. I don't have any complaints, but I wouldn't recommend him either.

Which hospital is closer to your house? If you in the southern suburbs driving to CTMC everyday can be a real hassle, especially if you have to stay longer.

Go to Dr. Kukard, if you not happy, then you can change again!

A cheaper option would be to do a homebirth or the Liesbeeck Active Birth Unit and use Mowbray maternity as your back up - that way if you need a cs it's about R8k and then your midwives fee..and you can use your MA to pay.
Kingsbury does not allow independent midwives - their cs rate is about90% ! Most of the Midwives use Vincent pallotti in Pinelands

Thanks Spiral

I'm definitely considering the midwife route, but there is obviously the concern that if anything does go wrong I will the need the gynae on duty and who knows what they will charge.
I know money shouldn't be a concern, but we just don't have that kind of cash lying around.
Does Kingsbury allow midwives at the hospital? Heard they don't anymore.

If your pregnancy is normal and you are healthy - you really should rather be seeing a midwife. have a look on www.capemidwives.co.za for local midwives
Much better care for you & baby during pregnancy, birth AND postnatally.

Hi all

I have found myself in a bit of an anxious situation. I am 23 weeks pregnant (first baby) and have had to come to the decision of changing gynaes as she is just too expensive and my medical aid will only cover half the fees!! (If even that  ) It was a very tough decision to make.

I'm based in Cape Town and have to attend Kingsbury or Cape Town MC due to med aid scheme, but really struggling to find a gynae that someones recommended that will be covered.

Dr Kukard at Kingsbury is apparently willing to go med aid rates for me..... anyone heard of him or experienced being under his care?

Please help! I'm literally losing sleep over this

Need advice regarding Dr Kukard or if there are any other reasonable gynaes at the above two hospitals.

Greatly appreciated!!!!
