They mention it like it's a common procedure in the "pregnancy and birth handbook" that I got from my medical aid (GEMS). I was super keen, but it's not done at the hospital I'm going to (Parklands in Durban). I can't speak for other hospitals though...

When I had my first LG, I had an epidural where I was able to move my feet, toes and my legs outwards. My mom had to keep pushing my legs together. It was really awesome as I was extremely anxious about not being able to move my feet. This was done in Mulbarton Hospital by the Anaethetist Dr Diesel.

I'm hoping he'll be around for my second one as he did a fabulous job, not exactly a mobile epi but pretty close to it.

That would make sense - having to have a nurse assigned to you the entire time - didn't think of it! I imagined the anesthetist would have to stay with you the whole time, but as I haven't given birth yet, I wasn't sure whether he stays with you the whole time anyway.

I read about it the first time in a locally produced book - A Life Begins - published by Nestlé South Africa 2010, and they say it's not common in SA yet, but is an option and may incur additional costs.

I then also read about it in two other local articles on Calorababy and Women24, so thought it might be more common.

I'd be prepared to pay for it if it's available! Depending on the cost I suppose :P Will talk to my doctor and see what he says too.

As far as I know - mobile epidurals are not done in South Africa because the nurse to mom ratio is not high enough. If you have a mobile epidural you need a nurse with you continuously to support you.

Curious to know if anyone has had a mobile epidural and what your experience was?
Also, has anyone had a mobile epidural at Kingsbury Hospital?

I did a search for the topic in the forums but couldn't find anything. If there's already a post somewhere please let me know
