Ob-gyn might not want normal birth

Thank you all for your advice. I will check out genesis clinic. I now see that i'm not just paranoid, it does seem like he wants to change my mind at the last minute. A part of me wants to wait until 36 weeks and see what he says, then make the decision whether to change him or not. The midwives at the hospital did say that they do support the mom with her decisions and they will speak to the Dr on your behalf and communicate your needs, especially if they also foresee no risks. But I'm not sure if it will be too late to change if I wait two more weeks.

@ Maj, my 36 week appointment is in two weeks, I just went to see him yesterday for my 34 week check up and he was still singing the same tune about checking me at 36 weeks. Plus in my antenatal classes (which are done at the hospital) I met another lady who wants natural birth and is also his patient and apparently he told her the same 36 week story.

My due date also came closer now, before it was the 20th of May, yesterday the scan said 17th May. I'll definitely join the group.

Its really nice to talk to people that understand exactly what i'm going through.

Thanks for your response. I'll talk to my husband and see what he says. I really didn't wanna have to change things at the last minute but its just getting me so uneasy the closer my due date gets.

@tom-tomz mom, I understand your uncertainty about this.
I suggest trying to find another dr (who does work at the same hospital) who is pro-natural. they can only assess during labour if you wont be able to deliver naturally.

When is your 36 week appointment?

Even though my gynea has assured me that we will try natural, im so worried that he is going to find an excuse for a c-sec. and it has nothing to do with him, its just the stats!

Trust your instinct if you think he is going to push for a c/s. The fact that he is evasive and wants to do a pelvic exam at 36 weeks is a danger sign for me. They basically "measure" the size of your pelvis. It is a very outdated procedure and inaccurate way to predict if you can birth normally.

I'm 32 weeks an booked for Genesis Clinic. The gynae I had at Fourways are also very pro-choice and has a midwife who can deliver at Fourways. I am using that midwife for Genesis but got a different back-up closer to the clinic.

I agree, not cool! Opt for Genesis and do a Hypnobirthing course. It's mind blowing!

Your doctor is not suppose to bully you into something - especially not if you had a smooth pregnancy. Go to Genesis Clinic and rather birth there - there is more than enough time to arrange that.

And even if you have a small frame, there is no reason why you won't dialate to 10cm.

Hi All

I just recently joined the page. Im 34 weeks pregnant and due to deliver next month. Every time I speak to my dr about the kind of delivery I would like to have (natural birth). He brushes it off and says we wont talk about it now. I have a feeling he wants me to have a c- section but he doesnt say explicitly. This is my first pregnancy and so far I haven't had any complications.

He keeps saying he'll tell me at 36 weeks after some sort of pelvic exam that determines whether I can deliver naturally or not, but I have never heard of any such exam. I thought that only when a woman is in labour can her pelvis open up fully to give birth. Granted I have a small frame, im about size 32 but im not comfortable with his silence. Im going to antenatal classes and have already booked a room and when they ask I just say im having natural birth.

But him not confirming is making me uneasy. Yesterday I spoke to another lady who was her patient about two years back and she said, to her he just came right out and told her he will deliver her baby c-section from the get go. I wish he had also let me know from the start. He is a good doctor with a good bedside manner and ultimately I want my baby to be healthy whether delivered naturally or c- section if it comes to it. But I atleast want to try giving birth naturally and not be cancelled out before I see whether I can or cant. I dont like him not being straightforward. And dont wanna have to change drs last minute. Btw my Dr is @ gynomed and im delivering at wilgeheuwel hospital. Any advice?
