pro natural birth gynea

Its very sad that some Gynaes feel pressured to do C-sections for the reason of medical insurance, but i guess that is just the reality of this country, and its their right to make that choice.

I have absolutely no issue with anyone going the C-section route. I feel strongly that woman should be allowed to chose how they birth their babies. what I have a MAJOR problem with is woman being misled by their doctors that their choice will be supported, only to have a pronatural decision over-ruled at the final hour.
I hear it time and again.

Thats why if its an uncomplicated pregnancy and the mom-to-be would prefer a natural delivery, a midwife with gynae backup is such a good choice.

I agree 100% with you Justine! I had an amazing natural birth with my midwife, doulah and hubby by my side. Only had a back up gynae in case of emergency. Started seeing only my midwife by 20 weeks - my gynae refused to assist with natural birth. Medical insurance is just too expensive for them. But I don't regret my decision one bit! I was in charge of my process and my birth was everything I wanted and more!

For a whole bunch of reasons, i suggest you consider hiring a private midwife, rather than going the gynae route.
1. they treat pregnancy as something natural, rather than a medical condition to be treated
2. they deliver many more babies naturally than the gynaes do (who quite typically only deliver ~20% of their patient's babies via normal birth)... this means they are really really good at it
3. they stay with you through your entire labour- the doctors will only come in in the last 30 mins or so for the delivery
4. its significantly cheaper- both for consultations prior and for the actual birth
i could go on and on!

Ive had three babies naturally with the help of the wonderful Ciska Van Straten at birth options, plumstead. They have a great team of midwives- i got the most incredible support each time (and very good care afterwards too).
All three were born at Vincent Pallotti, with Jacky Searle as my backup gynae in case anything went wrong.
Jacky Searle is a fabulous gynae.

The most important question you can ask any new gynae (if you do go that route) is what is your C-section rate. If its ~70-80% then be aware that you have to be extremely determined to insist on a natural deliver and get it. If you are at all uncertain or sitting on the fence about what you want, then with a 70-80% gynea, you will end up with a c-section.

I know Dr Jacky Searle at Vincent Pallottis is very pro natural. However I think she is very busy and not sure if she is taking on any more clients. But give her room a call, they can alwasy refer you to another pro-natural gynea.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a gynecologist who is pro natural birth based at Christian barnard hospital in cape town or Vincent paloti in pinelands? My medical aid plan im on unfortunately is very limited.

Would appreciate any recommendations as I'm not 100% comfortable with my current gynea
