My midwife and Doulah recommended breastmilk - pump some and put a few drops in his nose, then remove the mucus via whatever method works for you. The breastmilk doesn't dry out the nasal passages like the sprays. The sprays just create a vicious cycle - dry out, body produces extra mucus.. Etc.

Hello,

Hope you all beautiful ladies are well.

I have been trying to research the best remedy for my sons (2.5years old) congestion.

We moved from JHB to Cape Town a year ago and since then, he has the worst congestion, he constantly has a leaky nose.

I developed hayfever aswell and could not cope, so I can only imagine what he is going through...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The paed prescribes antibiotics and celestimine, which helps for a week at most.

I have tried:

1. Allecet
2. Deselex
3. Avamys
4. Monte Air granules

Thank you in Advance

Thanks Antz.

I have given him Allecet which is the same as Allergex, but doesn't cause drowsiness so he can get it during the day. It does help but also is not something I can do permanently. As soon as he has completed his course his congestion comes back again. Also whever he gets medicine it aggrivates his already severe reflux. :(

Widget - sounds like he needs something to dry up his nose... our paed presribed Allergex syrup daily for my 8month old... If it doesnt dry up it ends up in the chest which is our biggest worry... Its an antihistamine... which is awesome for allergies and post-nasal drip...

I don't think my little boy has gone a full week without being congested since his birth, poor thing.

The only thing that really works is Sterimar and using a nose frida (spelling? ) as often as necessary. I've sometimes done it as often as every 2 hours and it's the only thing that really really helps, because the stuff needs to come out!

I have a humidifier in his room every single night, but I don't know if it makes a real difference. I've used vaporiser drops in his bed and in the humidifier, but it makes no real difference. I use puma balm often but I never see a real improvement when I use it. It just makes him scream sometimes...and I wonder if it makes his eyes water. I put it on his chest, back and feet...but like I said, perhaps it helps if I use it along with everything else, but on it's own it does nothing significant.

If it gets really bad and he wakes up constantly because he can't breath or if he battles to feed, I use Illiadin, which works very very well, but you can only use that for max 7 days. I've used the sterimar for blocked noses on doctor's prescription, but it definitely does not work as well as the Illiadin. It is not effective at all if not used with suctioning.

Puma balm works wonders too... Its an old wives tell that my mum used for us and we swear by it... Especially on the feet...

And can be used in vapourises too...

The sweet almond oil is used as a carrier oil, to help dilute the essential oils so they don't irritate the skin. You can also use olive oil or coconut oil in it's place.
