Widget, google a bit on putting xylitol in her tea. Xylitol ( a sugar substitute) has a laxative effect. Also make her squat when she is going. It might help with the pushing.

We as mommies try our very best.

Sounds like you are doing your very best and trying & giving everything that should help your daughter go :)

Yes, you can get both those over the counter without a prescription.

Thanks momtoc, do I get those things just over the counter at a pharmacy?

She drinks lots of water and rooibos tea as well as juice during the day.

I give her dried prunes and she eats lots of fruits, not a day goes by that she at least has an apple or a paw paw as well as other fruits and veggies (luckily she loves veggies and is not a fussy eater)...I've been encouraging it even more now that I can see she is battling. I really am trying to up her fibre intake. I know at school they definitely dont' get a high fibre diet and it's not enough to try and make up on weekends I find...but I am trying my best to make sure her night time meals have fibre as well.

Thanks for the advise!

Hi there Widget

It is heartbreaking when our little ones suffer like that.

What does she eat on a typical day? Does she get lots of water or fluids in?

You can try giving her some of the following :
Prunes, prune juice, steamed pears, pear juice, paw paw, apple, weetbix(unsalted), otees and so on.

I don't like to give medication and always try to first rectify the problem BUT if it becomes a big problem, you can get Lacson syrup which is natural to soften to stools or Duphalac syrup is fabulous. Its pure glucose so its non habit forming (which is very important)

I think most of us don't get enough fibre in our diet and that tends to cause constipation.

All the best

Hi everyone,

Would anyone have some advise on what I can do to help my little girl with constipation?

She goes every day, but she has to push very hard to get it out and it's rock hard when it comes out. Sometimes she starts crying when she is pushing. :(
