Moomie went on a quest to find marvelous ideas to create a magical kids room your little ones will remember fondly. Some elements of a truly cool magical kids room:
Neverland
A space perfect for make-believe. A clothing rail with princess dresses, or an old trunk filled with pirate outfits. Mum’s old shoes and some costume jewellery. Even capes for superheroes or animal print onesies, ROARR! A bonus feature might be a stage built from a wooden pallet or two, with a stage curtain (easy to create with a shower rod and leftover material). A small tent will also add to the magic of a child’s make-believe world.
Book corner
A child (and an adult, for that matter) can never have enough books. Create a tranquil reading nook with a soft rug, some pillows and even a comfy poof or two. Coupled with a bookshelf, or even a few floating shelves lower on the wall, you’ll have an inviting and intimate space for little minds to get lost in stories. Add a CD player for relaxing background music.
Art space
Let the creativity flow! Make a chalkboard wall with some chalkboard paint for endless drawing and doodling opportunities. Fill a few see-through stacking drawers with finger-paints, crayons, pencils and chalk next to a small table (artist station, mum!). Use a piece of string and some washing pegs to display the latest masterpieces on the wall. Don’t forget some colouring books!
Active corner
Turn part of the kids room into a personal play park! Add a few soft play items, hang a swing from the roof, a small jungle gym to climb on and remember a few tumble mats. Perfect for burning off the crazy energy, in the safety of your home. Don’t forget a hula-hoop!
Discovery den
Inquisitive little minds love exploring with their senses. Create a special discovery den where they can go on treasure hunts. Fill small boxes with treasures to find and change it regularly for further expeditions while the little ones are asleep. Include sensory items, like kinetic play sand and play dough. It doesn’t have to cost anything: collect items in the garden like leaves, acorns and pieces of tree bark. Or from the kitchen: dry beans stitched in a bag, uncooked pasta and even dry oats, to run little fingers through.
And for that something extra – create a wall space specifically for playing with felt. Cut out felt animals, trees, flowers, insects, houses, anything really and stick it to the special felt wall. Combine all the before-mentioned elements – stories, make-believe, boosting creativity, sensory play – to ultimately create an AWESOME kids room that they will never forget. - Jana Cloete
