With regards to the cyst it all depends on what type it is, I went in to have mine removed and they found it is caused by endometriosis, a horrible dieasease with no known cure. This is why my cyst has returned. Your gf will hopefully only have a fluid filled cyst that once removed hopefully won't come back.

Which concerns me now, not only for my gf, but for all woman. Because if i understand you correctly, there is always a chance that these cysts could re-appear even after an operation to have them removed??? Goodness me

Hi there Mark,

Can you not get your gf onto a hospital plan for about 3 months and then do the op? Even if you paid the premiums for the rest of the year it would still be cheaper than paying cash for the operation. I am on medihelp and also a gap cover, I have been on it for two years and the amount that my surgery cost is still more than the premiums I have paid in the last two years. Definitely something to consider. If you do get a hosp plan it is vital to get a gap cover too, I expect it would cost about R1000 or just over for your gf to go on.

I am sorry she is in such pain. I had a 5cm cyst removed in Nov and by end of Jan it was back at 4cm.... It really is terrible to have to deal with and I hope and pray that she can heal quickly. My surgery came to about 50k but I am based in kzn so that won't help you too much.

We live on the East Rand, Kempton Park, to be exact and we work in Sandton. So hope that helps with places that you will recommend.
And yes, i totally agree with you that the bulk of the money due for the operation goes to the hospital. Out of the R47k we were quoted, only R13k goes to the gynae. And you know that we as patients or people in general don't even want to utter the term "public / government hospital". Of course if that in the end is our last, last resort, then we have no choice sadly.

But yeas, please see if you can send us the info on places you mentioned that you could refer us to visit. We would be eternally grateful.

Which area are you in?

I had to go for a Laparoscopic procedure and that amounted to +/- R33 000.00 I must say that the hospital charges the most. I had to stay over night. My gynecologist only charged about R4000 and the anesthesiologist charged R4500, so you can see how much the hospital actually charges. We are fortunate that we do have a medical aid.

You and your GF could maybe look into a diet to control the pain and cysts, it will not be a permanent solution, but might help with the pain and discomfort.

If you let us know where about you are we can give you some places to go and speak to.

My name is Mark and yes i am a guy, new to this forum so hope that will not be held against me...

I am enquiring on behalf of both myself and my girlfriend with regards to 2 x ovarian cysts that she has been struggling with for some months now and hope that maybe someone here can advise us and point us in the right direction.

The problem is she has 2 x ovarian cysts, 5.2 cm and 3.2 cm in size that has been causing some serious pain. However, with 2 young daughters and just about making it from pay cheque to pay cheque, we unfortunately just cannot afford medical aid at the moment.

As cash paying patients, our gynae has given us an estimate of R47000,00 for the required operation to have the cysts removed, something im sure you would understand we just have to get done.

So i was wondering if there is anyone on moomie who can possibly advise us or maybe refer us to a clinic where the costs might not be as exorbitant.
Or if you have any advice at all that would help, we would be eternally grateful.

Believe me when i say that i cannot imagine the pain my girlfriend goes through at times but i become teary eyed each time wishing i could take that pain upon me rather than to see her suffer the way she does. She is a "super woman rock star mommy" and i feel so helpless at the moment. Hence me now here, on moomie.

A long story but hope that i made some sense.
