I'm loving this post and having a little laugh on the inside too because this is exactly how it goes at our house with our 5 year old Daughter. Jo_C, you explained it exactly like it is!

The routine when we get ready in the mornings is that we all dress in our room. Either hubby or I fetch clothes for Ethan, put it on our bed and commence nagging. He’ll take off his PJs and then jiggle the dogs jowls until one of us reprimands “Ethan, what did I ask you to do”, which he’ll snap to and put on his jocks, then get distracted and start jumping on the bed, chase the dog around the room, toddle off to the loo or some such distraction until one of us snap again “Ethan, what have you been asked to do”. This will repeat itself for jocks, pants, shirt, 2 x socks and both shoes, brushing teeth, brushing hair and washing face.

Our days of falling out of bed 30 minutes before leaving home are loooonnnng gone.

This is not perfect, and a very tiring way to start of each day, but it has gotten a lot better then it used to be.

Last year we have big problems with our morning routine and chores, so I set up a start chart for him, with different things he was expected to do on his own without being nagged or assisted... brush teeth, dress himself, lay the table etc.. then at the end of every day (before bedtime) we put stars on his chart together talking about why he did or did not get stars for each area. At the end of the week he would get R1 per star of which 1/3 he could by his weekly sweet allowance and the other 2/3 would go into his piggy back to be deposited in the bank at the end of each month.

Different reward systems work for different kids, maybe try find something that works for you guys.

Good luck - its not easy and yes, I do think they need to be taught respect

My 5 yr old boy is so in-love with his baby brother. He helps me around when it’s little one’s bathing time, would pass me the baby oil and what not...
BUT

I get so frustrated :pinch: when I ask him for instance, to put on his shoes, all those petty stuff that would not be of any harm to him. He wouldn’t budge or stand up until you scream at him after you’ve repeated yourself thrice.

Is this being disrespectful :S or is this the stage they have to go through @ this age. Putting him in a place where I get to discipline him doesn’t help, as he would apologise  , forget and do the same thing again. He would even refuse to pick up his own mess after eating snacks. Are we not supposed to teach them to look after themselves or respect the elders while at an early stage? Maybe I’m in a hurry (I stand to be corrected), I don’t know.

What more do I have to do???? Is there a SUPER NANNY IN S.A

I’m getting so worried, I don’t know if I should call it being temperamental!!

This morning when his nanny was getting him ready for school I ended up getting involved as he refused for her to button up his shirt/put on his shoes etc. I then parked my car in the driveway as if I was leaving him behind; he started crying en calling the lady for help. This is a problem in a case whereby if the school transport was waiting for him..

Are any of you going through the same phase with your little ones  ? How do I discipline!!!!!!!

Ladies please help; your advice / views / suggestions would be most appreciative.
