Interesting Julz.
Ethan's left hand is also the dominating hand for eating, writing etc.
He does, however kick with right foot, so not sure how it will all play out.
Interesting what you mention about "mirroring". My nephew who is a 4th year engineering student (maybe there is some thruth in your theory mandy ;)) is also lefthanded. But he only writes with his left hand and does evrything else with his right hand, including writing on a black board  . Maybe because he mirrored his right handed mom and dad.

Jayden is turning 5, and I also don't know which hand is dominant. Most of the times he will do things with his left hand, other times with the right. So does one wait until he "decides" or should one work with him in stimulating right more than left?

Haven't received feedback from his new school yet, so at this stage I encourage right more than left :S

All the left hand people I know is extremely intelligent, so I don't know where the baboon thing comes from. And by the way, I am not left hand sided. My husband is left handed and right handed. :silly:

Julz I think what you are saying is right.

I am a lefty and I remember that I used both hands until I was about 8 years old, well maybe in my case it was because being a lefty was taboo and people always discouraged using the left hand, I remember that it was even discouraged at school so I was forced most of the time to use my right hand. but after a while I decided that left workd better and have been a full time lefty for so long I can hardly use my right hand anymore.

I wish people would not frown upon lefties so much, In our Zulu culture they say Left hands are used by baboons and so people shouldn't use them, WTF?

I know we had this discussion recently about toddlers and how do we know if they are left handed or right handed.

This morning I chatted to Dylan's school about his hands. They shake alot and he is suddenely struggling to do things as if he has no strength in his hands.

His school is great as they have someone who has studied occupational therpay so they did an assessment this morning and I got a call to say do I know what hand he seems to favour and I said I cant say but I think the right.

They said he is far stronger with the left hand and when offered items he takes with his left and then puts the item into his right hand.

This made me realise that Neil and I are both right handed and when I show him something I am showing him with my right hand and he is copying me, but if he is a true lefty we should possibly be encouraging the left side.

I did some reading and they say a right handed parent to a lefty should sit opposit and not next to the child so as to create a mirror effect. Interesting.

I spoke to the teacher and she says that some kids really only decide at age 5/6 as to what hand they should use so it's not set in stone, but it may be the reason why Dylan will give up so quickly because he really struggles with his right hand.

Just something to think about.
