i am using the midwifes from growth spurt. They are great. Used them with my first pregnancy aswell. I do not have a back up gynie yet. Genesis do about 80 birts a month, that is less than 2 a day on average. Can not wait for my birth at Genesis. First birth was at Linkswood.

Hi Christi,

I also had a wonderfull experience at genesis - and I ended up having an emergency c-section!!
(failed induction at 40wks, 3 days - big baby, HUGE head, narrow pelvis)

I used Marilyn and Veronica, and as the others said, had to pay cash and claim back.

I also used Dr Mia as backup, and he did my c-section (getting called out of mosque on a Friday night )

Marilyn stayed by me the entire afternoon (failed induction), and even assisted in theater during the c-sec.

I spend a total of 4 nights there (1 night for observation, and then the 3 following the c-sec), and don't think they were filled up once, So don't think the 8 rooms will be a problem. Just ask them how many births they have on average a day, and if they ever ran out of rooms.

As for my experience at genesis - WONDERFULL.
The room was so nice and comfortable, DH stayed by me all 3 nights following the birth.
The staff is amazing - they are really friendly, and go out of their way to help, with the smallest thing.
I still think its thanks to them that I'm still breastfeeding - if I didn't have all that help, I would not have managed, and most likely given up.

DainaJ - glad to read Dr Mia will do VBAC - means he is seeing me again with nr 2 sometime in the future ;)

Hello

I also had a wonderful birthing experience at genesis. My midwives were Ntombi and Xoli { Ntombi was on tv once] I used dr mia as my gyne and he was wonderful. When i passes my due date he said i shouldnt rush and do a c section because the baby is doing great but if by the following monday the baby doesnt come I should consider it. Also whenever I had one of those stressed momments and needed to see him for some pain or the other he always fitted me in. one day he actually waited for me as i was his last patient and i was super late.

Hi Christi!

I am also at Genesis Clinic and I am making use of the Growth Spurt Midwives, Jeanell and Henny. I am now almost 36 weeks and everything going well so far.
Like Joli mentioned, the midwives you'll have to pay cash and claim back and they do not charge discovery rates. In terms of the clinic itself, I am not 100% sure, according to my knowledge (we are also on Discovery) everything is covered while admitted (exept take out medication and the ussual stuff they don't cover).
I am attempting a VBAC and Dr Mia said that if anything happened before 37 weeks, I should go to either Parklane or Linkwood, as Genesis does not have a NICU. They do have a fully equipped theatre and facilities to resuscitate baby if necessary, but if more care is needed, they transport the baby to one of the above mentioned hospitals.
It is also true that there is only 8 rooms, but because there is more natural births than c-sections, the mommies does not stay that long.
I think as with every single institution / business, there is going to be ladies that had a bad experience. :( But I think in this case the majority of mommies had a wonderful, empowering experience at Genesis.
When is your due date?
I think Genesis is really worth a try if you want a natural birth.
Good luck with your decision! :P

Hi Christi. I used Marilyn and Veronica (up to 32 weeks). They charge R150 per visit, Discovery rate is only R69 (or something like that). You have to pay cash and claim back. You also need to pay them upfront for the birth and claim back from Discovery.

The rooms are really nice, but there's only 8 rooms. If the rooms are full, you will have to go somewhere else or wait until a room is available. You will pay in about R800 per night for your room.

All is nice and well IF everything goes according to plan and you've got no complications. Well if everything does not go to plan, you've got problems.

I booked in at Genesis, saw my midwife last at 32 weeks and then 2 days later went into labour. My waters break at work. So I called Veronica and she told me that she was not on duty, I must call Marilyn. So I called Marilyn and she told me - well sorry, she can't do anything for me, it's too early, I must go to any hospital's emergency room! I still wanted to know whether she could check me out by telling me whether it's water or pee that's leaking and I did expect them to get me a gynae to help me!

I then called Dr. Mia (saw him once during my pregnancy - he is also at Genesis) and got told that he's also not available! About half hour later, his secretary called back saying that he would be at Park Lane in about 1/2 hour and that I can go there if I wish which I did. I had an emergency c-section as there was no water left, I had contractions, did not dilate and baby was under stress.

Callum was admitted to NICU and one of the nurses there told me that they have admitted a lot of babies from Genesis already.

I'm not trying to discourage you or anything. If everything goes to plan (like it did with my 2 girls) you will have a wonderful birthing experience there. Nothing like natural water birth :-). Definately the most amazing experience.

Try Pindi - the midwife - she seems really nice and lots of people are using her and I've only heard good things re her.

P.s. Congrats on your pregnancy.
