question-circle Looking for a Midwife in PTA for a homebirth.

I went for my first consult this month with Midwives only to now find out Discovery's maternity benefit will not cover (I paid and claimed back from savings). So I am now trying to figure out if I should get a network registered nurse midwife and do home birth or just go to hospital with midwife. I don't want the latter though. Sigh, any advice.

I used midwives exclusive. They are situated at Femina Hospital but they are very willing to come and see you at your home.

They were great and my home birth was a success.

Hi everyone!

I am 29 weeks now and I am URGENTLY looking for a qualified midwife in the Pretoria (East) area who can possibly assist me with a homebirth? I had a c-sec 3 years ago (elective - gynea kind of forced me into it)... and I am SO considering a home birth..

Can anyone help please?

Claudia, I'm at Medihelp but on their network option. Their maternity benefits covers 2 scans and a max of R16000 for the birth with a midwife, they don't pay a gyni for the birth, if you want a gyni you'll have to pay him out of your pocket. On their "better" plans, they cover 12 gyni visits and pays the gyni for attending the birth.

So I have no idea how much they would pay the midwife and they won't cover a doula, but if your midwife claims for an assistant then she can claim part of the doula money back. I think most aids pays a max of R1200 for a midwife assistant, which must be claimed by the midwife on her bill.

@ Hasie, what med aid are you on? I'm with discovery and had HUGE fights with them about this issue. They claim to cover home births - but what they actually mean is that they cover births at the discovery rate, so it lands up being a big discrepancy.
With my birth the midwife charged R5000, but the discovery midwife fee was only about R1000 (shortfall of R4000), then they paid in full for all the consumables which were charged extra according to their nappi codes but only after declining the payment at first (because they said it was more than the normal hospital rate - unfortunately for them I work in a hospital and asked for their price list to compare and there was a difference, but y midwife was charging LESS than the netcare rate)
They also dont pay for a doula (and in my case my midwife insists that you have a doula who is also a qualified midwife if you have a homebirth so that their are 2 nurses available in the event of complications....) which I knew about and they didnt pay the travel costs (which I knew about). All in all the total for my birth was R8900, of which discovery paid just over 3000.
I had so many arguments because had I had a hospital birth they would have paid the hospital for 3 day stay, consumables, a paed consult in addition to midwife fees and it would have doubled the bill. Luckily I never use my savings and discovery eventually paid the difference out of my MSA. Next time I think I may have a midwife birth, but at a hospital just so that I can make a dent in their profits....:(
