question-circle WHAT IS THE AGE GAP BETWEEN YOUR CHILDREN?

15 years 4 weeks ago #206777 by ChubbyChick
Hi there!

My LG is was 15 months (yesterday) and I will be 16 weeks pregnant on Monday. Sometimes I am scared like hell of all the new adjustments thats coming our way, but luckily my DH is VERY helpful. We are both 30 this year and argued that we are going to do it and get it over with.

So now comes the wait and see. Hope I am still sane this time next year!

Yho Miss Kay, I could have just as well worked around naked in the kraal when my mother in law heard I was preggies with baby no 2. My first born was about 13 to 14 months when I conceived.
It is received with wide eyes but I wouldn't say its taboo really in African culture.

It all goes with opinions really, some people think its good to get it over and done with...you as the makoti are there to increase the family anyway, and some people will shake their heads and examine your state of mind.

I got both reactions...I ignore the negative and welcome the positive.

Oh and when I fell preggies with baby number 3 and baby 2 was still breastfeeding, I was told to wean him off immediately coz apparently I was giving my son 'dirty milk'.
I was heartbroken. In the beginning though, oh how my baby would cry and I would give in. But it didn't take long, he got the hint when I would stop him from breastfeeing and stopped on his own.

I just think that there is no law with age gaps, its up to the individual.

B

Mistymom - sorry for the late reply-
I find it difficult to keep up with cooking and cleaning.
A good nanny from 7-4 should be fine-
I have no help at the moment - so maybe saying live-in is more because I feel a little ou of control at the moment. I sometimes even leave the dishes to do 2 days later. It's making me feel down and because of the state of the house DH is not interested i having baby no 2.

I am curious and do not want to start a new topic but will like to know how people reacted on ur being preggies again in a short period.I have noticed that in the african tradition it seems taboo. Not sure why cause most of them have a 5-6 age gap and even more.My 1st child and the 2nd were going to be 3 yrs apart and my DH and I want our kids to grow up together, play together and and and especially with him and his own sister being 8 years far apart and still today find it hard to bond

Hi Misty Mom

Its all up to you!

I am pregnant with twins (second pregnancy) and have a 2 and a half year old daughter (she will be short of 3yrs by a month when they are born). We physically decided to have a 3yr gap as we though 4 yrs is too long but 2 years will be too hectic. I have spent a lot of time with my daughter and grateful for it as we enjoyed her for 2 and a half years solely. When the twins arrive I'm worried that she may feel a bit shunted as I think they may be hard work!

But really all up to you to decide. We have friends with varying age gaps between siblings but really depends on their personalities and how they are raised by the parents and family in the end.

Hi All, am 31yrs expecting my 3rd baby in November.

My first, a girl, was born Jan 2008
Second, a boy, was born 19 November 2009

There's a 22 month gap between 1 and 2, and there will be a 23 month gap between 2 and 3.

Number 2, even though he stopped breastfeeding, likes me to carry him a lot, especially now that the time is getting closer to the baby's birth and likes to reach down my blouse and touch his former milk bottles...LOL
He's say 'Mommy, I wanna breastfeed' and just touches them.

Its nice watching the first two grow up together. It is frustrating at times because the older one acts like the younger one to get attention, whines and even forgets to talk and uses baby talk. With one at 3years and another at 19 months its not easy but its fun.
Have two car seats as well now so hardly any space for a third person in the back.
They are attending the same school though which is nice.

Age gaps have their advantages and disadvantages, I think you just need to prepare yourself to be able to handle whatever emotional demands the kids make, no matter what the age gap. Because at the end of the day, its about maintaining a healthy emotional well being for the kids and yourself so that everyone grows up content.....:-)
