file Fear of natural birth increases C-section rate

ha ha, MariBiscuit, I must agree with you! The contractions were BAD - I only got through it without pain relief because my poor DH massaged the S*** out of my lower back during them. I was actually bruised afterwards...but it worked :) The pushing part was easy in comparison. I did have the hypnobirthing book and CD's and listened to them daily etc....so I'm sure that helped somewhat, but I certainly felt the pain! Really was worth it though...

Painless birth?? Not for me! Those contractions were KILLING me until I got my epidural!! And that didn't have anything to do with fear....it was just f***** sore!!!!!

Was I scared of natural birth? No, I wasn't. I thought it would be "lovely". I thought people were exaggerating. I became fearful when in labour, though. (I keep editing as I remember things!) I think I became fearful due to the responses the people around me had. When I went into labour, I was calm and excited. Then the medical facility took over and made me fear what was to come. And I started to believe them.

Am I scared of natural birth this time round? Just say I am mentally preparing myself to overcome a few obstacles to make it a wonderful, peaceful birth.

Getting back to the fear-factor. I think we are conditioned to believe an illusion that is not reality. We are told since we are small Eve were "punished" and will have pain when birthing. It is drilled into our minds and it is part of the fibre of our being. But it's not real. It's an illusion. And your mind believes it. So you have to condition your mind to believe the opposite. To go with it. Because if you read how your body responds to birthing, it is not sore. Birthing itself is not sore. The muscles pull back and up and it's painless. FEAR causes pain.

I do think that fear plays a big role in the high c-section rate. And I do think the most of the fear is based on a totally mis-informed society.

I on the other hand have a totally irrational fear of operations, c-section, epidural or any of those things. And I hate hospitals. Hopefully I never have to deal with either of the two.

I think it is very sad that society makes us afraid to do what we are designed to do. I hate the fact I fight with MEN! About the fact my labour didn't hurt. They insist that it does... until I have to ask them exactly how many times they have given birth. But these men influence their wifes/sisters/patients etc.

Dispite the fact I have not been able to have natural birth, I have never feared it, to me it is like a perfect dream, I feel sad I have not been able to experiance it.

And a Dr wont do anything to sooth your fears. Not even the "pro natural" one I found. I'm very glad that I found out about hypnobirthing and that a very pro-c-section friend of mine is now super pro-natural. She was with me in hospital and saw first hand that there is nothing to be afraid of :)

I must admit, I was totally different. I 100% wanted a C-section but because the medical aid doesn't cover elective C-sections I HAD to try natural birth. I told the gynae straight I wanted all the painmeds that is available (and an epidural), and if there was just the slightest chance that I had to get a C-section, that he would immediately go for it.

The gynae was the one that said that he doesn't see why I should want an elective C-section seen as the pregnancy went so well and I was still young and the baby was lying perfect bla bla bla.

So I didn't want natural birth AT ALL (yes, it was because I was scared) and the birth still went well. So even though my mindset sucked, it still worked out fine. The worst of the birth was the episiotomy AND I tore..I'm sure that hurt just as much as a C-section scar!!!!!

I, for one, wish that I was not as terrified of natural birth as I am. I guess part of me wishes to experience natural birth, but there is an irrational fear that overrides that wish.

I am super envious of woman who birth naturally!!!
