Gynae being sued..

This is so revolting...i cannot believe this Dr has such a heart to even do such a thing. It makes me sick to think that there are gynaes out there that do these things. I mean we trust them and this is what happens.
Thank God for the good ones out there.

Shame ...I feel so sorry for these women. Its sad.

I feel so sorry for all the ladies who suffered in the hands of this Dr Mokaya.

A pregnant colleaque mentioned a while ago that he was her gynae so when I read this on the newspaper I immediately called her and told her to read the article.

I told her about a Dr Barrow who is Sandton Mediclinic, he is apparently very good. He delivered my best friend's 2 babies.

I am absolutely shocked by this story. How awful for all of the ladies who have been affected!

Doctor ruined our lives, women claim

Gloria Mathidza miscarried and had her womb “vacuumed” for a pregnancy she wasn’t aware of in the first place.

Her gynaecologist, Dr Tom Mokaya, had assured her that he had cleared out the foetus and that she was healing.

However, no more than a week later, Mathidza – who was 31 at the time – started experiencing severe abdominal pains and sought the help of another gynaecologist, who recommended an ultrasound.

The last thing she expected to hear was a heartbeat.

The second doctor established that the foetus hadn’t been vacuumed and that Mathidza had been bleeding internally because of trauma to parts of her uterus.

“The doctor had to keep another lady who was scheduled for a caesarean waiting because she had to operate on me immediately.”

Mathidza is one of several women who’ve come forward to speak about their experiences with Mokaya after seeing a report in The Star last week about Tseli Seboka, another of Mokaya’s former patients. Seboka is pursuing legal action against Mokaya, who removed Seboka’s ovarian cysts at

Sunninghill Hospital.

During the operation, Mokaya allegedly cut her colon. Seboka found out about this only days later when another doctor performed an emergency scan on her.

Seboka said the operation had led to complications that had left her bedridden for a year. Mokaya said he could not respond to the allegations as the matter was before court.

Mathidza accuses Mokaya of negligence after consulting him at the Sandton Medi-Clinic in September last year

“The GP (general practitioner) said I was having a miscarriage. I didn’t know that I was pregnant. He said I’d have to stay overnight and someone would see me the following morning. Mokaya came. He said he’d seen my file and that he was going to vacuum me. After the procedure, I spent the night and was discharged the following day. After a week, I went for a check-up and he said I was healing okay and I could go back to work after a few days.”

Mathidza started experiencing abdominal pains again and went to Mokaya twice. On both occasions he scanned her and told her everything was okay.

“The third time he said he needed to operate on me ‘now-now’.”

Mathidza called her aunt, a doctor, and asked her to refer her to another gynaecologist. They found she was still carrying the foetus.

“She told me she had to remove the baby… there was no way it would survive. My right fallopian tube had to be removed.”

She said: “I don’t understand why he’s still allowed to practise. How many lives has he ruined?”

In 2006, Jessica Igrec, 35, was miscarrying her twins nine weeks into her pregnancy and was rushed to the Sandton Medi-Clinic.

Mokaya treated her.

“Dr Mokaya said I need to be admitted so he could perform the dilation and curettage (D and C – the clearing out of the uterus) that evening. I went into theatre that Sunday night and that’s when all hell broke loose… I woke up a few days later on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.”

Igrec said she was later told that “Mokaya had cut a fibroid and I had haemorrhaged while he was performing the D and C”.

Two other doctors, Victor Barrow and David Adler, were called to help, and it was decided that Igrec had to have a hysterectomy.

“I cannot begin to explain the emotional, physical and mental trauma this man has put my family and friends through,” she said.

The Health Professions Council of SA says Mokaya has two cases pending against him – not obtaining consent from a patient for a procedure; and not following up on laboratory reports and not informing a patient of results timeously. - The Star
