I just wanted to give you more info as promised in previous post. Ive been recommended to go to St Marys hospital in Pinetown, they have an antenatal clinic which you pay per visit, the doctor thinks its about R50. They also do a semi private birth option but all the info is on their website.

If anyone out there has been to St Marys please I would appreciate your views. Im off to sit and wait on Monday and start the process as Im 12 weeks.

I just wanted to let you know you're not on your own on this one, we're in the same boat. I have no experience of maternity/child birth in SA and am originally from Jhb, I had my daughter in the UK and haven't gone onto med aid since moving back a year ago.

Im 10 weeks at the moment. I go to a PrimeCure GP so will see what options they suggest in two weeks time and Ill update this post with anything useful for you.

I just found out that I am (VERY UNEXPECTEDLY) 5 weeks pregnant. I don`t have a medical aid. I am not familiar with Durban and it`s surrounding areas. I am trying to find a suitable hospital.

I have contacted Nu Shifa hospital, and the prices I was given are as follows:


NVD 24hrs stay with own doctor R15000.00
C/SECTION 2.5 days with own doctor R20000.00

Not sure if the guy just didn`t want to help me, or if the prices could have escalated so drastically??

Any suggestions on Semi-private or other not too expensive options would be much appreciated.

I`ve got 2 kids, one was born in a state hospital, and the other in a private hospital, both in Pietermaritzburg.... I must admit, the conditions (cleanliness) and lack of privacy at the state hospital was a big downside. However, in the private hospital the gynea that delivered my daughter made the experience EXTREMELY unpleasant. After my daughter was born I vowed to never have kids again.......

So I am not sold on Private hospitals..... What I am looking for is compassion and understanding.... And for this experience to be a pleasant one.....

Any recommendations, prices and contact numbers (or emails) would be much appreciated!!!!

Hi Ladies,
I am about to have my baby at Hillcrest Private Hospital ... My gynae is Dr Gangaram and he is VERY good. His number is 031 768 8082. I was meant to go to Strang as referred by my GP but he was "too full" - so ended up with Dr Gangaram and I find him to be patient, kind and very knowledgeable. He is doing my delivery by C-Section on 1 August - very excited.
Good luck to all expecting Mommies - it's been quite a journey!!!

Shame man, always a worry. There are independent places you can go to if you want to go sooner

I am in Glenmore. My first I had with Dr Roberts at Umhlanga Hospital. She then moved to Alberlito Hospital in Ballito so had my daughter there.

My first appointment is only on 29 July, when I'll be 9 weeks. I wish it was sooner, but he's very busy! I did have bloods checked with my GP on the 28th of June, and they gave me the speech

What area are you in? Which gynea and hospital did you use for yours?

I am not pregnant but have a 4 year old and a 7.5 month old. Can help where I can
