file Giving birth in Australia and VERY nervous

Dis wat my uitstres.

Ek het GEEN clue hoe groot die baba is nie, in SA kon hulle dit darem estimate. Hierso meet hulle jou en that's it. So vir al wat ek weet is baba se kop huge.

Staceylee, apparently the Chinese guy is actually very good :) I also laughed when I heard about him for the first time :)

Hi MB,
You know what you are comfortable with as Deja already said. Being in an unfamiliar place and different country is scary, but you can still voice your opinions and what you would like and wouldn't.
I laughed when I read the little chinese dr part. I've been living in Hong Kong for almost 3 years now. I haven't given birth here in Hk yet but I've visited my dr and hospitals more than I'd care to admit. What I can tell you is the care and knowledge of the drs here has been great. Many of them go to Australia to study and then come back to HK to practice.

I have 2 little girls and we living in Hong Kong.

MB, all I can say, and you know how I feel, is that you must not even contemplate a worst case scenario. You did it once, you'll do it again. You probably won't even need an epidural. Just think of Paula's birth! And Claire's! You are going to be FINE.

Start visualizing your baby's birth, talk to baby, reassure him that it will be fine. He has nothing to be scared of and you neither. Your body knows exactly what to do. And your baby does as well. Trust it.

Elamsmom I wanted to do the Hypnobirthing course but because I moved to Aus we didn't have the time. I bought the book and CD's through a lady in the Northern Suburbs (can't recall her name now).

Hasie I'm not a fan of waterbirths - I will not feel comfortable giving birth in a 'bath' - too self conscious :( I think it's too late now to tell my obstetrician that I don't need him there for the birth now :) I will definitely draw up a birth plan though.

I did go for the tour of the hospital and because it's mainly run by midwives they are VERY pro natural. For example they don't even think about inducing you unless you're more than a week overdue - it's just not the way the system works. And they have birthing balls and chairs available which I'll definitely make use of! Will get the Primrose tablets tomorrow!

Went for a check-up at the doctor today - baby is in the correct position with head very low (he tried to show the baby's face to my daughter but couldn't cause his face is turned backwards). Baby's back is at the front - sorry don't know the technical terms :) He says there's still enough fluid. He said baby is definitely not 5kg but he can't guarantee that baby will be under 4kg. He also said that if I really want to, he can do a stretch and sweep next week Wednesday with my next appointment. Do you think that's a good idea? I don't want to "force" baby out and then end up with going into labour when baby's not ready.

Sorry if I'm not making any sense!

I'm walking alot so that will help. Will see if I have energy for the sex haha :)

Niki I was definitely rushed with my first pregnancy!! I recall the doctor saying 'push push push' and I still thought - give me time to breathe FFS!!!! So will try and be more relaxed with the pushing this time round.

Will try the perineal massage thanks!

Marijke unfortunately this is my worst case scenario :) Being in a different country without the support of friends and family and being home-alone while being stressed out is not a walk through the park. Nee jong, ek's nie desperaat genoeg vir kaster olie en maagwerkings nie haha!

Elamsmom, I can sell you the book, but the best is really to do a full course. I can't remember where you are situated, but if you are close to Pretoria, my next course is starting 3 May. Some SA hospitals offer water birth, but not many. If you are in Jhb its best to go to Genisis and in Pretoria Midwifes-exclusive at Femina clinic (a netcare hospital) offers midwife led care with gyni backup on the hospital grounds and they do water births etc... They will also have quite a bit of HypnoBirthing experience by the time you have your baby as most of my moms are going there.

Let me know if you are interested in a course! A good time to start is around 20 weeks, so you being 17 now, the next course will be at a nice time for you. anina@beautifullyborn.co.za

Hey ladies

Sorry to hi-jack thread.

@MB or Hasie: Where can I get the Hypnobirthing cd & book etc? When should you start reading it? I am only 17 weeks and 1st baby was born via c-sec just cos I chickened out. I really want a natural birth this time. I can tell my gyane is not keen so I want to be as prepared and knowledgeable as possible so that he doen't pressure me into a c-sec when i am at my most vulnerable. (during labour).

Also, do SA hospitals (pvt) offer water births? Or would you need to go to a clinic like Genesis?

Thanks.

@MB: do not have a c-sec out of fear. I did that and still regret it.
