Hi Kena

Welcome, and a big CONGRATS!

I don't think any medical Adi scheme will cover "pre-existing" conditions (incl pregnancy), but you can join, and they will cover baby. You may find some that will bend the rules! Otherwise join one you're comfy with and don't say anything
Good luck with finding a scheme that will accomodate you! I do know that the costs will pile high if you don't get it sorted immediately. Doctors bills for mum and baby are not cheap if you want good decent healthcare!

The only medical aid that I know of, that will cover the pregnancy and birth is GEMS. Its only open to government employees though. You will find a lot of gynaes work with cash only anyway, and you will have to claim from the med aid afterwards.

Good luck to you!

Hi Kena

Please let me know if you got a medical aid that will cover you. I'm in the same boat, 7wks and 4 days pregnant today and need to find a medical aid that will cover the birth and beyond. thanks.

Welcome Kena, and congratulations!

Although I don't think that your pregnancy will be covered by any medical aid (your best chance is Fedhealth or Medihelp) it is important to go onto medical aid so that your baby will be covered after the birth. If baba needs to go into ICU, you have to put down R 50 000 at most hospitals if you don't have medical aid.

A c/s at most hospitals will cost you around R 27 000, and you have to put that down before going into theater. So even if you want a natural birth, please have that kind of money available incase.

If you look at midwifes as primary caregivers, it can by much cheaper than going with a gynie. And you might just have a much better experience as well... Birth centers are almost always cheaper than a hospital and off course home birth with a good midwife would be your cheapest option. But still, you need a back up plan. So you either need a green card from a state hospital or the money for a c/s at a private hospital.

Good luck, I hope you can still find someone to cover you!

Hi all
I'm very new at this....
Found out 2 days ago that I am 5½ weeks pregnant. I really need to get onto a medical aid, does anybody know if there is still anybody out there that will cover existing pregnancies??
