NTDs develop in the early stage of the pregnancy. For about three thousand pregnancies get affected due to NTDs in US. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, if pregnant women start taking the dose of folic acid before conceiving and after getting pregnant for first three months of pregnancy then it reduces risk of NTDs up to 50 to 60 percent. Some of the benefits of folic acid pregnancy include formation of red blood cells and thus it helps in prevention from anemia. Also, it is good enough for curing baby from cleft palate and cleft lip.
