Doctors fees

My gynae is Dr JJ De Souza from Parklane, he charges R412 for each monthly checkup and R1200 for the detailed scans which were only four.

Nixy are you on medical aid? if you are query whether they cover the full cost of labour. if you are paying cash then i would advise you to find out the cost as soon as possible, some gynaes are quiet reasonable when it comes to cash payments, but some charge an arm and a leg.

Nixy, if your doctor is on your med aid's network then I dont think you need to worry about the fees for the birth. If he/she is not on the network, you should just ask for a quote in advance, as some doctors ask more than medical aid rates, then you will have to pay the difference.

My gyane charged me R1220 for the very first scan when I was just over 7 weeks pregnant.

The next scan was done at 10 weeks or so and it was R520 (last year).

The last one was done at about 16 weeks and it was R672 (prices went up this year).

He doesn't do 3D or 4D scans but all the consultations include the printout of the scan and the urine test.

I went to the Fetal Assessment Centre in Claremont, Cape Town yesterday for my 20 week scan and that was R1700 - it was a long appointment though and included a DVD of all the photos and a video of my baby's face moving and opening his mouth.

Next appointment at the Fetal Assessment Centre is at 26 weeks for the 3D/4D scan which is only costing R950 (it's an optional appointment, not compulsory)

And I have nooooo idea how much my gynae is going to charge for the birth...

KateLee that doesn't sound normal at all! What concerns me the most is that she refuses to give you an invoice for cash payments, that's highly unethical...

I would def take it up with her and then if things don't change, I'd def change to another doctor. Some good ones are expensive, yes, but these fees sound crazy to me!

Thanks Irene, fortunately as she is contracted to Discovery so they will pay the delivery in full. Its all the visits that are turning out to be so expensive. She does offer a cheaper rate of R700 if you pay cash, however she then refuses to give an invoice with codes on it so I am unable to claim the money back from the medical aid. I will see her next week and will have a discussion with her then.

What made the 12 week consult so expensive was the colour doplar (R1200) over and above R500 consult fee, R650 for the scan and then charges for urine tests.

Angie, I'm being charged R54 for scan print outs.

I live in Jhb and my doctor charges R600 per normal visit, but excluding the following:

1st visit: R1755
12 week visit: R1000
20 weeks: R1400
32 weeks: R1100

Every single visit includes normal scans, 4d-scan and photos (both printed and copied onto a disc for us). She also delivered my first baby and I have an excellent relationship with her. While there might be cheaper doctors, I'm gladly paying her rate because I get a fantastic doctor that really makes me feel looked after.
