Dear GPRJane,

I am now 23 weeks pregnant and my baby shower will be early October.

I have so many male friends and do not want to exclude them based on their gender! The other reason was that this baby is also my husband's baby, not just mine, so why would he not be included? This means that he would also like to celebrate this special event with his friends.

So we will be having a mixed gender spit braai as a baby shower. My sister will be decorating the living room all traditional baby shower like and then we will just have a nice get together. The girls can bring normal baby shower stuff and we asked the gentlemen to bring diapers :)

This is however a very new trend and it can be difficult for the moms to come around to. They have most probably planned your baby shower from the day you got engaged and was looking forward to arranging it. My advice would be to talk to them nicely and keep in mind their point of view. The main thing is to let them still partake so that they feel special and valued in arranging this.

Good luck :)

I've been to a shower where the dad was included and I have a friend in another city who said that she wanted a mixed shower for her second baby (her little ones were quite far apart and they originally hadn't planned for another baby).

My husband has said that he'd like to have a nappy party (braai) with the men while the ladies have the baby shower. I told him that it would be appropriate since men are full of $h!t  But I don't know if that's happening or not.

I also had 2 baby showers which were both mixed, and it was so fun  really makes the hubby feel included. The guys took part in all games. Everyone had a great time

Ladies for my first pregnancy we had a combined baby shower, all the men and my hubby were present, took part in the games and we had such a lot of fun.

Plus my hubby got to help open presents and he was very emotional cause he got to truly feel like a first time dad, we were the first couple in our family to have a combo baby shower bet thereafter everyone started doing it, cause the dad's did make the baby too and they also want to be part of it.

even at my work baby shower my male work colleagues took part in everything, times are changing as our the dad's get more involved I think it's awesome if the baby shower is planned around both parents, family bonding!!!

We going to have a combo baby shower for the second baby as well.

Hi GPSJane

We are still trying to conceive our first but my hubby and myself have both agreed that we want a combined baby shower/party. My husband would be part of our ttc journey and will be actively involved in bringing up the baby so why should he be excluded in something so special.

But I hear you, a lot of women just want women at the baby shower so they can ooh and aah and have a good time. I understand that but for us we will be having a combined baby shower.

I am sure everything is going to work out perfectly. :)

I mentioned at the lunch we organised to tell both sets of grand parents about their impending grandparenthood that we have decided we want a men and women-together baby shower.

My mom had a complete fit and when I got her to calm down I could see my mom-in-law also did not agree with us.

I wanted to point out that this is for us so really, what's the big deal? I mean, seriously, men take part now and mine definitely does/will. We would rather just have a normal party and share it.

So we will prevail but I was wondering what you all think?
