question-circle Hair colouring and pregnancy?

As I know colouring and pregnancy could be combined. But it's better to use natural dyes and first consult the doctor. My 4 months pregnant cousin don't want to due her hair during pregnancy, but I think that I would never hold out)

I don't think going to a salon for a style and a cut is a problem - especially if it is well ventilated. I would be careful about hair colouring - for the same reason one would not take certain drugs, etc during pregnancy. Each pregnancy is different and each mummy and baby are unique. Yes, many women smoke and take other drugs during pregnancy, but the effects on the baby may not be seen in the short-term only. Past generations did many things during pregnancy we no longer do and they also had more miscarriages, stillbirths, etc. I would embrace the grey. But each mommy must do what makes her comfortable.

About ammonia-free dyes - check the contents - even hair dyes that claim to be natural may not be completely natural, because colouring is a chemical process. Unless of course you use pure henna - but the results are not always safe and consistent with henna and your greys may come our orange.

Hello Ladies

I don't think there are any issues with colouring your hair during pregnancy because the dyes don't contain as many harmful chemicals as they used to. But I did avoid doing in the first trimester - Just in case.

Also, be careful with colour you go for, I had my hair done a week ago in the colour I normally get, but it came out in a different shade - Apparently the hormones play a part in how your hair takes to the colour.

I think its totally up to the individual.

I haven't coloured my hair since falling pregnant, but then again I am lucky enough to not have any grey hairs - and now its grown out to the extent that it just looks ombre-ish (thats what I keep telling myself, lol) - not health related, I just don't have the time (tiredness means I would rather sleep than sit in a chair for 2-4 hours).

Its not such a huge deal for me, but generally mothers seem to be okay after dye-ing. Also, my hairdresser said that they have ammonia-free colour, if you are particularly picky.

We ALL need time out to relax - so if doing your hair makes you feel great, go ahead!

Hi everyone,

Interesting, I was wondering the same my hair is a total mess and I feel like a mess as well  I am doing da Hair on Saturday its looooong overdue.

My 1st Dr said you must wait until the 2nd Trimester but the other Dr's say you can colour your hair as long as the room it ventilated.

Good Luck ladies

Hi Jay-Bee

I looked it up and decided not to worry. When I went to have my hair done, I asked my hairdresser if she was concerned (she's known me for my whole life, so I doubt she'd push for me to dye if she thought it might be harmful) and she was fine.

There's a lot of contradicting information, but from what I read the absorption of any chemicals from hair dye is minimal.

Thanks Joanne, it really helps knowing that it is safe and loads of moms are doing it and their babies are fine. I also buy the Pregnancy magazine every month or so and the "models" on the cover always have beautiful hair and some even have very blond hilites too.

Thanks again
