Hospital room-advice needed please

Hi ladies, I'm hoping one of you could help me. I am due end next month/early may and have done my bed booking with the pre-authorisation from the medical aid but that was just for a general ward(I was told I can only book semi-private or private room on the day as it will be subject to availability). 
What I need advice with is- what was your experience with a general ward or semi-private room if you had one and for those who had a private room, was it worth the cost?(as this would need to be paid out of pocket as medical aid only covers general ward). Lastly- what were the costs of these rooms for the semi-private and/or private and when was the timeframe that you had to pay that amount.
