Hi Moms,

This is a terrible experience for any child to endure! We can be grateful it was not more severe! I hope your little angel makes a full recovery.

I offer Family orientated First Aid courses that are accredited and are at a level nannies/domestics in fact anyone with basic intelligence level can understand. We are in the JHB area and you are welcome to contact me if you are interested. We typically charge R295 per person. www.lastingaid.co.za

First Aid Tip for Burns:

Place burnt body part under room temperature running water for 10-15mins. DO NOT APPLY butter, vaseline or the like... it does further damage. In all cases where skin is broken or blisters form in children, seek medical advice.

Regards,

Alastair

As ugly as that story is, I think it reminds us not to be so complacent ... I think we all sort of just get used to nothing going wrong.

That's really bad!

I want to share a story with all of you but it's really bad and does not have a happy ending but one should know that things like this has happened en can happen if you are not careful!

My mother was about 4 years old and they had a very big house, 3 floors to be exact. Her uncle and his wife visited them from CT. One afternoon my mothers aunt ran a bath for her but she also ran the warm water first and left the room to fetch something, did not close the door behind her as my mother had a 11month old sister and the bath in that bathroom was sunk into the floor, my grandmother was knitting in her room and my mothers sister was playing in that room where my granny was knitting but all of a sudden my granny noticed that the baby was not there anymore and rushed out and asked everyone if they have seen her as there were a lot of people in the house and they started to look for her. My mom say they had 2 domestic’s working for them in the house but because the house was so big it was men that worked in the house and they also started looking for her my mom say she can remember that she went in to the bathroom to see if her sister was in there but she did not see her and just after she went in one of the house workers went in and saw the baby in the bath he called my granny. My granny just stuck her arms into the water and took her out of the (bath her skin was already soft and coming of) and told someone to hand her al towel as she was a nurse and just rolled her up in the towel she then ran into the street and shouted for help as my grandpa was at work so the neighbors rushed out and took her to hospital. When they got to hospital the baby was still alive but unfortunately there was nothing they could do for her and she passed away!

I can not emphasize enough how important it is not to open your warm water taps alone or to put in warm water first!

The first aid courses usually cost between R300.00 - R500.00.

I go with my nanny - you need to find a good one that uses dummies that you can all do the resusitation on and the person giving the course is qualified and experienced.

We went last year and it was really good - they let us work on "baby" dummies and then on "child" dummies so you got to learn where to push, and how hard and so on.

A lot of mommy-and-baby groups host them, usually once a year. Ask around in your area, check bulletin boards at your local clinic or breastfeeding clinic, phone St. John's Ambulance Services.

I really think all nannies should go on the safety / first aid courses but also helps if they dont leave a baby/child unattended at any time. Anything can happen is a split second

kids are far too clever and fast :)

KIMBER - wow, a good result considering what could have happened.

If your mom is going to be leaving your child with a new nanny, I really would encourage you to spring for the new nanny to go on a first aid course that talks about how quickly kids can drown and hurt themselves.

First aid courses that are geared to domestic situations and small children.

I am sorry she got hurt, I am also relieved she got off with such a minor injury - it really could have been so much worse. Poor baby!
