Kellan has been sleeping for about an 8hr stretch at night since he was about 10wks, but he is awful during the day, hardly sleeps for more than half an hour at a time, he is nearly 5months now.

Hi,

I give my baby her last feed at 10pm and then wake her up between 3 and 4am. This has been so for the last 3 weeks.

Twice I slept through the night and didn't hear my alarm to wake her, only for her to wake up at 6am. I felt so guiltyb but th Dr's advice this morning relieved me of my guilt.

I asked my paed this morning if I should continue waking her up and he adviced me not to. He says baby will let you know if she is hungry.

Mrs DD I think it depends on the baby - James is almost 12 weeks and if I dont wrap him snug he startles himsefl awake. I've stopped swaddling though and instead tuck his blanket into the mattress:) His flailing arms always waken him, but if hes snug he slepps a lot longer (ie a couple of hours compared to 20mins at a time:))

Thanks Lucy for this topic.

My little girl is 4 weeks and is averaging 2 hours sleeps (on good days)

Mandy B: You mentioned that baby should not be wrapped to snug, is this only at 6 weeks? I heard that the incontrolable movements of her hands etc make babies stay awake.

Hi

My son is now 6 months old has been sleeping through from just after he turned 4 months. So I have been quite lucky in that regard. However prior to him sleeping through he used to wake sometimes every 2 hrs at night and sometimes he would not go back to sleep for a few hours. I had a terrible time. But then something just clicked and he just started sleeping through and now stirrs occassionally for me to put his dummy in his mouth.

He was a very difficult baby and suffered from Colic and still has reflux - I medicate him for the reflux. The Colic stopped at 18 weeks.

I do however still rock him to sleep in the pram for all his sleeps. I too went to see Ann Richardson and she told me that at the beginning I should worry about rocking him and spoiling him. Whatever works for you is good. I do not however take him out his cot and rock him during the night if he wakes up. I comfort him by shshing him and putting my hand on him. I stopped all his night feeds once he was established on solids. But I recommend waking your baby for a feed just before you go to bed. This may help in you getting some more sleep.

A taglet or security blankie is a good idea. My son has a taglet and he just knows that when I give it to him- it is sleep time.

I need to sleep train my son so that I can just put him the cot and he goes to sleep on his own. I am planning on doing this soon.

Also I would not sleep train a 6 week old. Way too young in my books.
